I started thinking of who knows what I am going through. How was I going to make her believe I have been running away from Jeremy for so long?
"Please give me a chance," I said.
I looked at her with teary eyes. I wasn't crying for her to help me, but because I know after this there is no more.
"What kind of support or opportunity do you want?" Malie asked while she turned to my dry face.
I resumed with the thought of what I could do to convince her. I remembered that I worked as an Editor-in-Chief of a newspaper office in Paris.
I remembered his phone number because I usually called him from different phones when I was not going to show up at work. I called him when I had issues because of running away from Jeremy. I deserved to be sacked. He always had mercy on me.
"You can call my Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper office I worked for," I said.
"Interesting. Where is this office?" Malie started becoming inquisitive.
I had no choice but to answer the question.
"Paris," I said bluntly while looking into her eyes.
"Can you please get in touch with him for me?" I have his number and he can be of great help." I said.
"Sure, I won't mind." Malie agreed.
I gave her the number. She dialed it—It was ringing. It felt like a solution was calling.
No one picked. The light on my face got dim. Malie dialed the number again. She wasn't picking up. It wasn't going through at some point. I crossed my fingers.
Oh no!
Suddenly, it was picked. The phone was on speaker.
"Hello," I said
"Hello? This is the assistant. How may I help you?" The assistant said, while my fingers were tightly crossed.
"Can I speak with the Editor-in-Chief?" I said with a shaky voice.
"No, ma'am. Unfortunately, the Editor-in-Chief is not available." The assistant said.
I was already feeling bad that I could not get through to the Editor-in-Chief.
"He just boarded a flight to attend a friend's wedding. Please, do well to reach out later."
Call ended.
The wedding bells were ringing. Bells of sorrow, pain, and regret. But damn, the place was beautifully decorated. The shining decorated balls, the seats were covered with sequined cloth, and each table had flowers placed on it. Each door had a roll of flowers falling. I could not count the bouquet in the hall.
All the wicked maids and waitresses were working like robots. I wondered if they slept.
It was so colorful and I can't lie about beautiful things. It was beautiful.
I was removed from the room to the waiting room. I gazed at almost every part of the wedding venue. I was going to prepare and dress up at the wedding venue.
I continued looking at every nook and cranny. I had nothing I was looking for specifically.
"Damn, what in the name is that?" I said to myself.
I saw a beautiful photo of myself with an unknown name attached to it. I can't remember having any twin siblings. I was having a lot of questions.
I wore a heavy wedding dress. I had my jewelry on my neck, and I had my makeup done by the maids.
One thing was missing from the makeup—my smile.
I could not escape but it felt like I had hope.
Jeremy got into the waiting room. Immediately he stepped in and the waiters stepped out.
I looked away when I saw him coming. I hated seeing my eyes on his face. I hated being around his presence.
"I know you have seen your picture and a different name attached to the picture."
"I just came to address that." He said.
"I have arranged an impeccable identity for you. You have to listen to me and do as I say." He added.
"Oh, so this is your plan…" I interrupted.
"Just listen, Alysa. Listen and so as I say." Jeremy cautioned me.
"What about my looks?" I asked.
"Anyone can look like you in the world. We look alike everywhere so that is not a problem." Jeremy answered.
"Nice one…" I said before he interrupted.
"I don't even need to explain anything to anyone. I don't need to give an answer to any questions." He interrupted.
"Nice one. If I am recognized, what are you going to do about that?" I asked again.
"Nothing." He gave a quick reply.
"I am your niece, Jeremy. You are about to marry your niece." I said while demonstrating.
"...about to marry a niece that is not my niece," Jeremy said.
"How?"
"Don't you say that! I am your late Sister's daughter."
"I was known to be her daughter…" I was saying while he continued interrupting me.
"...related by what?"
"Oil?"
"Water or blood?" Jeremy said as he challenged me with those deep questions.
I was going to stop answering, but I had to answer even when I knew the answer wasn't going to make any sense to him.
I got goosebumps and heartaches at the same time.
" …all of it!" I shouted.
"You are not my niece, young lady."
"You were adopted and you are not actually related to me by BLOOD!"
"Stop dragging this, that is a whole lot of argument." He said coming close to my face. It felt like he was going to eat me.
I was speechless. I did not know what to say anymore. Instead, the memories of Jessica pawned me. At that point, I was only thinking about her, the way she took care of me, and the way she called me her princess. I felt miserable that I lost her. I felt more miserable that I was denied and I was forced into a marriage I had no interest in.
I started crying out loud. I felt miserable. There was a knock on the door. I quickly wiped my eyes and face before it was opened.
It was Malie, the supporting actress, and my Hero, Max.
I breathed in and out deeply.
