The Burden of Protection

The moon hung high in the night sky, casting a silver glow over the tranquil village nestled in the heart of the dense forest. It was a time of peace that belied the storm brewing just beyond the trees. In a modest home, a young girl sat by the window, her large, curious eyes reflecting the soft light of the moon. This was Clarice, only eight years old but already carrying a weight far beyond her years.

Her mother, a gentle woman with a serene face, knelt beside her, brushing her daughter's hair with practiced care. "Clarice, my dear, there is something very important I need to tell you," she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

Clarice turned to face her mother, her brow furrowed in concern. "What is it, Mama?"

Her mother took a deep breath, her expression serious. "You know our tribe has long protected a girl named Nicole, yes? She is special—more special than anyone could imagine. And she needs our protection now more than ever."
