47. A Funny Thing About The Past

Thank you all for the reviews. DId you guys watch the Chicago Fire medpisode? I really liked it. Although, at first I thought Gaby was sleeping with Will before I realized it was in fact Casey. I thought "Damn girl, BOTH Halstead brothers? Get it" But, I will admit I am glad it was Casey, as I'm sure most of you are. And how about that Crossover promo? I love it.

Hope you guys like this chapter.

"Where the hell are we?" Erin asked Jay pulled into the driveway of a large brick house with a white picket fence.

"We're picking up your Mother's Day gift" Jay said opening the driver's side door and getting out.

Erin looked at the house and slowly moved to get out of the car. "What gift is here?"

Jay unbuckled Everly from her car seat and lifted the infant out of the back of the car before placing a kiss on her temple and cradling her against his chest.

"You'll see" Jay explained as he shut the back door and walked towards the front porch of the house.

"Is this a ritual killing?" Erin asked looking around as she followed Jay up to the front of the house.

"Indeed" Jay said as he rang the bell.

0000000000000000000000000

Olivia Benson stood in the interrogation room looking at the man sitting in front of her. She didn't need to know Ryan Halstead, she didn't want to know Ryan Halstead.

"I didn't do it" Ryan said his eyes locking with Olivia's as he felt Hank Voight walking behind him.

"You didn't do it?" Olivia repeated "Of course you didn't"

Olivia held up the picture of the black and blue girl and slid it in front of Ryan. "You didn't do this. Funny, because I bet I can run the DNA under her fingernails and odds are, it's going to match up with that scratch across your cheek"

Ryan raised his hand to the marks on his cheek "This came from an unhappy patient. Not some whore in a hotel room that I slept with one time"

"Do you know how many times I've heard that story, Ryan?" Olivia asked.

Olivia walked around the table and bent forward, placing her hand on the table and looking Ryan in the eyes. "Do you know tired I am of hearing that?"

Ryan shrugged his shoulders "I don't know, how tired?"

Voight grabbed Ryan by his hair and jerked his head back. "How about you answer the question with a little bit of respect"

Ryan grimiced at the pain and jerked his head away from Voight.

"You've got the wrong guy. Whatever you have on me, I'm bring framed" Ryan explained.

"You were a positive ID, Ryan" Olivia said.

"Yeah? Yeah, so I fucked her. Doesn't make me a criminal. I may have slept with her, but I didn't attack her" Ryan shot.

Voight shook his head and walked past Ryan and Olivia and slammed his fist down on the table. "You're not going to get out of this. I know that your family rescues you from everything, but not this. Ryan. You're going to go to prision and you're father can't help you with this"

Ryan rolled his eyes "Kinda hard for him to help me since he's been dead for five years"

"He probably died from shame from having you as a son" Voight said.

Ryan laughed and looked at Hank. "If anyone broke my father's heart, it was Jay. So if you're looking to point fingers on who would've killed my dad, it's the loser Halstead. Not the one who's a doctor"

Olivia saw the rage flicker in Hank's eyes as he stepped towards Ryan and she put her arm up to try to be a barrier between the two men. Hank looked at Olivia's pleading gaze and his stance softened for a moment before he walked past her and over to Ryan.

"The loser Halstead?" Voight asked "So the loser Halstead is the one who goes out every day and busts his ass for his wife and daughter and puts his life on the line to protect the city he lives in and the people who live in it? The loser Halstead is the one who faught a war for his country? I think the loser Halstead is the one who's sitting in front of me. You know the one who sexually assulted a waitress in a hotel room. The one who has a gambling debt so deep that he's going to have to pay his debt with body parts"

Ryan turned his head away from Hank and groaned when he felt Hank grab his face

"Look at me when I'm talking to you" Hank said

"Sargeant Voight" Olivia said taking a step towards him.

"I'm taking care of it" Hank said not turning to look at her.

Olivia watched as Hank let loose of Ryan's face and she sighed when he reached up and slapped Ryan. The sound echoing through the small room.

"Sargeant" Olivia said again.

"I'm just asking him a question" Hank said.

"There's a time and a place" Olivia said.

Hank looked around the room "Yeah, and this is it. If you don't like the way I'm running things in MY district, feel free to look the other way"

Olivia turned on her heel and walked out of the room slamming the door behind her.

0000000000000000000000000

"Which one do we pick?" Erin asked as she looked in the pen of german shepherd puppies.

Jay looked at Erin and laughed at the excitement in her voice. Clearly, a puppy was the right idea as a gift.

"Any one you want. It's your puppy" Jay said as he adjusted Evie in his arms.

Erin looked at the puppies as the owner opened the pen door and the four week old puppies came out. Erin knelt down on the ground as they all came towards her and Jay.

Jay knelt down and sat Everly on his knee to see the puppies.

"What's that Evie?" Jay asked. His gaze not leaving his daughter's face as she looked at the puppies.

Evie's brow narrowed as she watched the puppies come up to her and roll around and play. Not quite sure what the four legged ball of fur was. She watched as one walked towards her and started to lick her legs and gently grasp the white elastic sandal she had on her foot and gently tug.

"No no puppy" Jay said as he gently pushed the puppy away from Everly only for the puppy to return and start licking Everly's feet.

Everly's face turned to a frown and she started to fuss on Jay's knee. Afraid of the puppy that was licking her small feet.

"It's ok, Evie bug" Jay said standing up as he cradled Everly against him and rubbed her back as she cried. "It's just a puppy. He just wanted to say hello"

Everly settled against Jay's shoulder and tuned her head into his neck and sighed as Jay continued to rub her back.

"Is she ok?" Erin asked looking up at him from the ground.

"She's fine. In need of an afternoon nap. But she's fine. Do you know which one you like?" Jay asked.

Erin looked down at the puppy who'd climbed it's way onto her lap and was napping. "I like this this one"

"The runt of the litter?" The owner of the puppies asked. "Are you sure?"

Erin nodded "Of course. He just needs a little bit of TLC. And just because he's the runt of the litter doesn't make him any less worthy of a loving home"

The owner of the puppies nodded and looked at Jay "My mistake, I'll put a collar on him so we'll know he's yours"

Erin nodded and picked the puppy up with her as she stood up.

Jay watched Erin as she cradled the puppy and rubbed it's ears.

"You ok?" Jay asked.

Erin nodded "I don't know why people are like that. They always think the smallest or the weakest one isn't good enough. People just want to throw them out and cast them aside and I don't get it"

Jay nodded and looked at Erin. "I don't think she meant it that way, I just think she meant that she figured you'd want a puppy who was more playful and energetic"

Erin looked at the small puppy in her arms who whined and yawned.

"You said I could pick MY puppy, I want this one"

0000000000000000000000000

"I don't appreciate you undermining me" Olivia spat as Hank walked into his office.

"We've been through this before. I run my city different than what you do, that's fine. But don't come into my city thinking you run it" Hank said.

"You're not going to get anywhere with Ryan Halstead doing this crap. You're going to get a complaint or a lawsuit against your district. And I'm sure there will be more to follow" Olivia explained.

"Well then they can get in line. I'm sure there's plenty of room on those papers for my name. Won't be the first time" Hank said taking a seat at his desk.

"You're being unreasonable about this. What if he is being framed?" Olivia asked.

"He's not. You said yourself it was a positive ID" Hank said.

"But what if the girl is working with the the men who are after Ryan?" Olivia sat down at Hank's desk and looked at him.

"If that's the case, then we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. But you're the one who brought this case to me. And I know we've both worked long enough to know that there's rarely a case where someone is innocent" Hank said. "Do you think it's easy for me to be invovled in this? This affects my family"

Olivia nodded "I know that, and I may have been wrong to have approached you with this. But I didn't know that Ryan Halstead was related to your son in law. You can feel free to remove yourself from this case. I'm sure that I can find..."

Hank shook his head "No, we're going to see this all the way through. I can handle the fallout from my family. Ryan Halstead needs to know that he can't get away with this. Status doesn't mean anything. Doctor or not"

Olivia's gaze rose to meet Hank's "I really am sorry about this. I know that this isn't an ideal situation. And I know that I don't agree with the way that you run your city. I know that you have your ways, and I've known that for awhile. But I'd appreciate if you could see things form my side too"

Hank nodded "I'll try. But you need to realize that my way might not be the best way. Hell, sometimes it's not even the legal way. But my way gets things done"

"As does mine" Olivia said.

Hank looked at his watch and then up to Olivia. "We should go. Are you still planning on going to the game tonight?"

Olivia nodded and looked out in the Bullpen at Ruzek and Atwater who were joking and laughing about something.

"Are you sure I can trust them with my son?"

Hank sighed and looked out at Atwater and Ruzek. "What's the worst that could happen?"

0000000000000000000000000

Erin looked down at Everly as the baby hungrily nursed from her breast. Everly's hand was grasping the necklace around Erin's neck like she always did when she nursed and Erin ran her thumb over Ev's cheek as she looked at her.

Jay walked in the nursery and stopped for a moment as he watched his wife and daughter together. It didn't matter how many times he'd seen them in this position. To watch them both staring intently at each other could always stop him in his tracks.

"Are you ready for tonight?" Jay asked as he looked at his wife.

"Yeah, I'm ready. But I think I'm going to forgo the beer that I'm really wanting. I don't really want to pump and dump and I'm not sure how well Ev's going to deal with a bottle" Erin looked up from Evie to Jay and smiled when she saw him in his Blackhawks shirt and jeans.

"Yeah, but tonight is about you having fun as well. And I really don't think it's going to be that hard for Evie to take a bottle for the night" Jay said.

"I don't know" Erin sighed looking back down at her daughter.

Jay sighed and looked at Erin "Babe it's going to be fun. I promise"

Erin nodded "Are you going to get up and feed her tonight?"

Jay nodded "Of course. She's not going to have a problem with the bottle"

The sound of the doorbell ringing interrupted Jay and Erin's conversation. "I'll get it"

0000000000000000000000000

Jay walked down the steps and opened the front door for Kevin and Adam.

"What's up?" Jay asked.

"Not much. Just coming to babysit while you guys get to go to the Blackhawks game" Atwater said walking past Jay and into Hank Voight's home.

"Maybe you shouldn't have agreed to it then" Jay said.

"I don't mind babysitting. I mean she's 3 months old, what's she going to do?" Ruzek said.

Jay looked up at the door as a car pulled up front and Olivia got out and walked around the back of the car to lift Noah out.

"Is that her?" A voice asked from the top of the stairs.

"That's her" Jay said looking up to see Hank Voight at the top of the stairs.

Hank walked down the stairs just as Olivia was walking up the front porch with Noah on her hip.

"You gotta crush, Sargeant?" Ruzek asked as he and Atwater laughed.

"Ruzek, do you and Atwater want to be working for the Department of Highways cleaning road kill?" Voight asked.

Adam and Kevin both stopped laughing as Hank opened the door.

"Olivia" Hank said simply.

"Hank" Olivia said offering a smile.

Hank stepped aside so that Olivia could walk in.

"Nice to see you again, Sargeant Benson" Atwater said extending his hand.

"Nice to see you as well, Kevin" Olivia said "And please call me Olivia"

"Olivia" Atwater repeated.

"Noah's already had dinner and been changed. He usually has a bedtime snack before I put him down for the night. He's getting a tooth so he's not really been in the best of moods, but I have my number and everything written down on a paper in his diaper bag" Olivia explained setting Noah's diaper bag down on the couch.

"Is he going to cry when you leave?" Ruzek asked.

Olivia ran her hand down Noah's back and shook her head. "He does really well when I leave him. So I think he'll be ok. He really likes "Jake and the Neverland Pirates" and "Special Agent Oso" so if you want to put that on, he'll be your best friend"

Erin walked down the steps carrying Everly against her. The baby girl already changed and dressed in her pajamas.

"We should go if we're going to make it to the arena and find a place to park" Hank said.

Erin nodded and looked down at Everly and at Ruzek and Atwater. "If you do anything to her, I swear to God..."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence" Ruzek said. "I mean we are doing this for free"

Erin walked over to Everly's swing in the corner and laid her down in it. "Mommy will be back later. You be a good girl"

Everly looked up at Erin and smiled behind her binky.

"Aby?" Noah said pointing down at the swing from Olivia's arms.

"Yes, that's a baby. That's Everly" Olivia said placing a kiss on Noah's cheek.

"Aby" Noah repeated as he wiggled to get out of Olivia's arms.

Olivia knelt down and sat Noah on the ground. She took him by his hand as he started to walk towards the swing where Everly was.

"Hey" Olivia said gently pulling Noah's hand.

Noah turned to look at her and then back at Evie.

"You be a good boy while I'm gone. I'll be back soon. Can I have a kiss?" Olivia asked

Noah sighed and stepped towards Olivia and gave her an open mouth kiss on the lips before walking over to Everly's seat.

"Aby" Noah said.

"Ok, let's go" Hank said. "I expect my house to be the way I left it when I come home"

Ruzek and Atwater nodded as they watched the four leave for the game.

0000000000000000000000000

Jay pushed Erin's hand away from his lap for the 4th time in 10 minutes as he looked at her. She'd only had one beer. Her first beer in over a year and she was VERY tipsy, and tipsy Erin was a very handsy Erin.

Handsy Erin was typically Jay's favorite Erin, only the watchful eye of the man who was basically his father in law was more than enough to keep his body from reacting to Erin's wondering hands and lips.

"Jay" Erin whispered nuzzling her husbands neck. He hand sliding knee deep down his thigh.

"Erin" Jay sighed reaching down to grab her hand.

"Take me to the bathroom" Erin said her lips trailing down his jaw.

"Why?" Jay said.

"Cause I want you to fuck me" Erin groaned and slid her hand down to his lap.

Jay closed his eyes and reached up to push Erin away from him. "Let's just enjoy the game ok?"

Erin's gaze looked at the players on the ice and then back at her blue eyed husband.

"I don't want to. I want you to touch me and do bad things to me" Erin laughed and moved her head to his neck.

Hank cleared his throat as he looked at Jay and narrowed his eyes at him.

It was going to be a long night.

0000000000000000000000000

Noah looked from his place on the floor surrounded by his toys at Adam who was standing with Atwater trying to calm a fussing Everly.

"I don't know what to do" Adam said. "Maybe we should just call Erin and Jay"

Atwater shook his head "No. Don't call them. They'll never trust us to do anything again. We're two grown men. Surely we can figure out what a crying baby needs"

"Why can't she be as good as Noah?" Ruzek asked "He's not made a noise all night"

Ruzek turned back to where Noah was on the floor and saw and empty blanket.

"Where is he?" Ruzek asked.

"Where's who?" Atwater said as he finally got Everly strapped into the Baby Bjorn.

"Waldo" Ruzek said rolling his eyes "Where's Noah. He was just here"

Atwater turned and looked at the living room. "I don't know. He couldnt' have gone far"

Adam walked out of the living room and back towards the kitchen and screamed.

Atwater quickly followed and stopped dead in his tracks. In the few minutes that he and Ruzek had their backs turned. Noah had managed to pull out a bag of flour and pour it all over the kitchen floor. and the trail of foot prints led to the fridge where the toddler was squeezing handful's of Hershey's chocolate syrup on his hands and licking it off.

"What the hell?" Ruzek said walking over to Noah.

Noah looked up at Adam and laughed before licking another handful of syrup off of his hands.

"Can I have this?" Adam asked reaching down and gently taking the chocolate syrup bottle from the tiny boy's hands.

Noah looked at Ruzek and then at Atwater before whining and he started crying.

0000000000000000000000000

"I hope that you had a nice time tonight" Hank said as he walked up to the front door of his house with Olivia.

"I did. It was interesting" Olivia said looking back at Jay who was walking with a tipsy Erin.

"Sorry about that" Hank said.

Olivia shook her head "It's fine. She deserves to have a fun night. I know all about the stress of motherhood"

Jay walked past Olivia and Hank and helped Erin up the steps and into the house.

Hank and Olivia followed when they saw Jay stop dead in his steps.

Hank walked in the house and saw Noah in his diaper and Ruzek brushing the young boy's wet hair. While Atwater ran a vacuum with a sleeping Everly strapped to his chest as he cleaned up a bottle of baby powder off of Hank's living room floor.

"What the hell happened?" Hank asked.

"Well..." Ruzek started.

"You know, I don't want to know. I just want this mess cleaned up" Hank said.

Olivia walked over to where Noah was sitting on Ruzek's lap.

"What happened?" Olivia asked as she picked Noah up.

"Uh oh" Noah said pointing to the floor where the baby powder was.

"I see that" Olivia said. "Why is your hair wet?"

Ruzek sighed "We had an incident with some chocolate syrup and he had to get a bath. I was changing him and thus the baby powder spill"

Olivia nodded "You don't know very much about toddlers do you, Adam?"

Adam shook his head "No ma'am"

Olivia sighed "A quiet toddler is never a good thing. Just remember that"

Adam nodded and walked back towards the laundry room to get Noah's pajamas from the dryer.

Jay looked at Atwater who had Everly strapped to him as he turned off the vacuum cleaner. "How was she?"

Atwater looked down at the sleeping baby "She's...good birth control"

Jay nodded "Should've probably told you she loves the sound of the vacuum cleaner"

Atwater nodded "Yeah...thanks for that"

Ruzek walked back into the living room with Noah's now clean pajamas and handed them to Olivia.

"Sorry about all this" Ruzek offered.

"It's fine" Olivia said as she dressed Noah. "Believe me Lucy and I have cleaned up worse messes"

Ruzek nodded and looked at Noah.

"You ready to go lil' man?" Olivia asked as she stood and lifted Noah up.

"Bye bye?" Noah asked.

"Yes" Olivia said as she walked to the door.

"I'll walk you out" Hank said.

"Say bye, Noah" Olivia said.

Noah looked at Olivia and then at Atwater and Ruzek before waving his hand.

"I want this mess cleaned up" Hank said as he walked out of the house behind Olivia and shut the door behind him.

0000000000000000000000000

"Jay...Stairs...Up...Come" Erin slurred from her location at the top of the stairs before laughing.

"I'll be back to get my kid" Jay said follwing Erin up the stairs.

Jay walked up the stairs and wrapped his arms around his unsteady wife.

"Let's get you to bed" Jay said.

"Great idea' Erin said wrapping her arms around her husband's neck.

Jay shook his head and lifted Erin up in his arms before carrying her into the bedroom.

Jay sat Erin down on the bed and she looked at him and laid back down along the bed.

Jay shook his head as knelt down and pulled Erin's boots and socks off before removing her jeans leaving her dressed in her underwear and his oversized Blackhawks t shirt.

Erin opened her eyes and looked down at her husband "Jay, come put a baby in me"

Jay laughed and shook his head "Yeah. You're drunk"

"No. I'm not drunk...you're drunk" Erin said.

"My sober wife wouldn't say that"Jay said standing up.

Erin laughed and closed her eyes. "Don't you want to put another baby in me?"

Jay sighed and reached down to pull Erin up so he could pull the covers down the bed. "I do. But I think we sould wait until the one we have now is old enough to be a little bit self sufficiant"

Erin laid back in the bed and frowned. "Our baby is getting big"

Jay nodded "That she is"

"I don't like it" Erin sighed.

"Well you get some sleep. And I'll be back to check on you" Jay said.

"I love you" Erin said. "Like really love you"

Jay laughed and bent his head to kiss Erin. She kissed back for a few seconds before going limp and Jay pulled back to look at his sleeping wife.

Jay brushed a dirty blonde lock of Erin's hair across her forehead.

"I love you, too"

0000000000000000000000000

Jay walked downstairs to be met with Atwater and Ruzek finishing up cleaning their mess.

"How did this even happen?" Jay asked.

"It's a long story. All I know is I'm getting fixed" Ruzek said with a sigh as he plopped down on the couch.

"Erin hit it pretty hard tonight. huh?" Kevin said as he handed a sleeping Evie to Jay.

"She only had one. She's not used to drinking now" Jay explained as he cradled Everly against him.

"What's she going to do when Ev needs to nurse?" Atwater asked.

"I'm going to bottle feed her for the first time" Jay said.

"Are you sure that's going to work?" Ruzek asked.

"Why wouldn't it? breast milk is breast milk regardless" Jay said.

"Man, you're my best friend, but you're stupid" Ruzek said.

"And why is that?" Jay asked.

Adam shook his head "Because she's not stupid she's going to know the difference between a breast and a bottle. She and Erin bond when she's feeding her. So if you think you're going to get her to take a bottle without a fight then you['re a fool"

Jay shook his head. "It's not going to be that bad. It's only for tonight and maybe tomorrow. How bad can it be?"

0000000000000000000000000

2 weeks later

Jay walked down the hall after changing Everly and he cradled her against him as he headed downstairs. The last two weeks had been hell on Earth. Ruzek and Atwater had been right about Evie and the bottle. His daughter had thrown a fit over the bottle and a 4am text from Ruzek telling Jay to spray on some of Erin's perfume wasn't the line of support he'd wanted to get. To top that hell on Earth night, Everly had started to get her first tooth which had made her extremely cranky and tore Jay and Erin's sex life to hell. Because a tired Erin and a fussy baby meant no fun for Jay. But tonight would be different Olivia was in town with Noah and they were going to attempt to have a BBQ.

"Halstead" Hank called from his room.

Jay adjusted Everly in his arms and walked in.

"What's up?" Jay asked.

"Does this shirt look ok?" Hank asked.

Jay raised an eyebrow as he looked at Hank. Olivia Benson had certinly had her effect on the 50 year old man in front of him.

"It looks fine" Jay said. "Why are you nervous?"

"I haven't been on a date in 30 years" Hank confessed.

"Well, times have changed. People have sex on the first date now" Jay said.

Hank narrowed his eyes at Jay "Did you and Erin?"

Jay quickly shook his head "No...no...we...no"

Hank sighed and loosened the button on the wrist of his shirt. He knew Halstead was lying through his teeth "I'm not going to kill you right now"

"Why? Cause we have an understanding now?" Jay asked.

Hank shook his head "No, because the baby's here"

The sound of the doorbell ringing gave Jay his out and he quickly left Hank's bedroom and walked down the stairs as Erin opened the door to Olivia and Noah.

"Hi" Erin said as she looked at the two of them.

"Hi Erin" Olivia said as Noah squirmed in Olivia's arms to reach for Erin.

Erin laughed and reached for the toddler who wasn't so much wanting Erin's embrace, but the chocolate chip cookie in her hand.

"Yeah, he's like a lap dog when it comes to those" Olivia said as she walked into the living room and took a seat.

"That's ok. I don't mind" Erin said as she sat down on the couch with Olivia. "So how's New York?"

Olivia smiled as she watched Noah eat the pieces of cookie that Erin was breaking up for him.

"It's really good. Busy, but good. It's hard to find the balance betwen being a mom and working"

Erin nodded "I'm heading back to work in September. I dread it. I used to think that nothing would be worth my job. But as soon as they laid Everly on my chest...it changed everything"

Olivia nodded "I understand that. I have days when it takes all I have to walk out of my place and leave Noah with Lucy. My biggest fear is that he's going to get hurt or sick and reach for the comfort of someone else, before he'd reach for me"

Erin sighed as she looked at Olivia "So, what are your intentions with Hank?"

Olivia laughed "Nice segue"

Erin shrugged her shoulders and laughed. "Well..."

Olivia sighed "I'm not looking for anything serious, Erin. Hank and I are friends"

Erin narrowed her eyes "Why? Because he's not good enough for you?"

Olivia shook her head "I didn't say that. Erin, Hank is 50 years old. I am 48 and the mother of a one year old. I don't think that's something to build a relationship on. Especially with a man who lives 800 miles away"

Erin nodded and looked out the back door at Hank who was holding Everly in his arms. "I understand"

0000000000000000000000000

"And that Everly is the most imprtant part of grill safety" Hank explained as he balanced Everly in one arm and put the top down on the grill.

"Shouldn't grill safety's most imprtant part be not holding my daughter while you're about to light up a grill?" Jay asked as he walked over to Hank.

"Halstead, I did this with Justin for years" Hank said.

"That explains a lot" Jay said under his breath.

"I heard that" Hank said as he bounced Everly in his arm.

"You're using way too many brickets" Jay said looking down into the grill.

"No, I'm not" Hank said.

"Yes, you are. You're going to burn your deck down" Jay said.

Hank walked away from the grill and over to the back door.

"Where are you going?" Jay asked.

"I'm going to take Everly inside so she doesn't have to witness me killing her father" Hank said.

0000000000000000000000000

Erin sat at the picnic table in the backyard as she watched Hank holding Everly and Olivia pushing Noah in the small swing that Hank had put up for Olive and Justin's son when they'd visit. The sight brought a smile to Erin's face and she looked over at her husband who was watching her.

"What are you staring at, Jay?" Erin asked.

"Just wondering how I ever got so lucky" Jay said. "About how much I love you and how I'd do anything for you"

Erin reached across Jay and grabbed a carrot stick before plopping it in her mouth and gently biting down as she locked eyes with her husband. Her free hand slid down to Jay's jean covered leg and she smiled when she heard her husband groan and grab her hand.

"It's not fair when you tease me" Jay said. "Cause you're asking for it"

Erin laughed as she gave Jay's thigh a squeeze as Hank and Olivia walked back over towards the table. Noah's excitement as he babbled over the impending hot dog he was about to eat filled the air as they got closer to the table.

Jay sighed as he felt Erin's hand slide lower on his thigh. It was going to be a long dinner. He silently gave thanks that he was seated by the cooler of ice. He was sure he was going to need it.

0000000000000000000000000

One Week Later

Kim climbed the stairs to her apartment with Adam, who was weighted down with their luggage in tow. Kim reached the front door and was about to turn the knob when she heard a thud and then felt Adam's strong arms encircle her waist from behind.

His warm breath tickled her ear. She and Adam had taken a week and gotten out of Chicago and just tried to put the events with Roman behind them. The thing about drama? It's always waiting at home when you get back.

"What do you think you're doing, Burgess?" Adam grumbled.

Kim giggled and leaned back against him.

"I was just going into the apartment, Adam."

Adam tightened his arms around her and pressed himself against her bottom. Kim rubbed against him, feeling the beginnings of his arousal and he groaned and bit her ear gently.

"You are not entering that place on your feet."

Kim rubbed her ass against him again, this time more slowly, and he growled softly.

"Behave yourself. You don't want me to have to drag you to the ground right here now do you?"

Kim's breath hitched slightly and she felt a gush of warmth between her thighs at just his implication. It was so amazing how they could affect each other, even just with words.

Adam heard her and chuckled in her ear."Turn around Burgess."

Kim turned in his arms, sliding her arms around his neck and Adam lowered his mouth to capture her lips. Kim opened her mouth under his and accepted his questing tongue. She sighed softly into his mouth and his arms tightened around her, pulling her flush against him.

Her taste intoxicated him. He was addicted to it and he knew he would never be able to live without it.

Adam bent and swept her up into his arms and she gasped in surprise, pulling her lips away from his.

"Adam." She giggled again.

"Oh, just pipe down, will you? Try to act girlie for once."

"Hey!" She smacked him playfully on the chest and his kissed her again as he reached for the doorknob and turned it.

He stepped inside the apartment that was formally Erin and Jay's and kicked the door shut with his foot. They continued to kiss as he carefully walked through the living room toward their bedroom.

Kim pulled her mouth away and rested her forehead against his. She kept her eyes closed as he continued to watch her; grateful he knew the route to the room instinctively.

"Adam, what are you doing?"

"I'm carrying you over the threshold."

Kim opened her eyes and smiled softly. "We're not married yet. What are you doing?"

"I'm not taking any chances with bad luck in this marriage. I'm carrying you over the bedroom threshold too. You can never have too many thresholds you know."

Adam walked into the bedroom and toward the bed.

"Maybe I should carry you over the threshold of all the rooms in this place just to be safe."

"You're such a dork." Kim giggled at him as he stopped at the edge of the bed, nibbling her chin.

"Yeah, but I'm your dork."

Kim cupped his face in her hands and rubbed the tip of his nose with her own.

"Yes, you are. What do you say we christen our bed, dork?" Kim brushed her lips against his and he sank into the kiss as he lay her down on the bed, covering her body with his. Kim placed her feet flat on the bed as Adam settled between her thighs.

Adam ground his hips against hers, his erection hard and throbbing as he rubbed against her center. He could feel her heat through her shorts and he groaned into her mouth.

Adam's hand slid under the hem of her shirt and caressed the warm skin of her stomach. His hand slid upward and had just reached the soft underside of her breast when a small giggle beside them made them both jump like two teenagers who had been caught making out by their parents. They flew apart, settling at opposite ends of the bed. Erin stood in the doorway embarrassment crossing her features as she held a giggling Everly in her arms.

"Sorry" Erin said looking away from Kim and Adam. "I just wanted to see how your vacation went. I can come back"

Adam stood up holding his hand out to Kim.

"Don't worry about it Erin. I've got to go to the district anyway"

Kim stood and adjusted her disheveled shirt as they all walked into the kitchen.

Kim grabbed Adam's hand as he headed toward the door.

"Wait. Let me go with you."

"Kim, you guys have been alone together all week." Erin whined as she winked at Adam. "Let him go and do what he needs to do so you can give me all the juicy details of your trip."

Adam laughed. "On that note, I'm off to do manly things."

Adam tugged lightly on Kim's hand and pulled her into his arms. He kissed the side of her head.

"Love you Burgess. I'll be back in a few hours."

Kim tilted her face up and kissed him softly, a kiss that silently promised more when he returned.

"Are you sure you don't want me to go with you?"

Erin looked over at Kim and sighed.

"Aww, come on Kim. If Adam needs help, have him ask Roman."

Adam, who was absently rubbing Kim's lower back as he nuzzled her neck, stiffened and his eyes hardened at the mention of Roman's name.

Kim pulled back and looked into his face, catching his look of rage before he had a chance to hide it and she cupped his face in her hands.

"Adam." She whispered softly, imploring him with her eyes to please let it go.

He forced a smile and pulled away from her.

"I can go alone. It won't take long." Adam kissed her quickly and turned to walk out.

Kim grabbed his hand to stop his retreat. Adam didn't turn to look at her.

"Erin, I'm going to go with Adam."

No." Adam barked a little more harshly than he intended and Kim stepped back and let his hand slip from hers as her eyes narrowed. Adam's shoulders slumped in shame as Erin turned and eyed them with interest.

"Darlin, I'm sorry." Adam turned to her and took her face in his hands as he leaned his forehead against hers. "It's okay. You stay with Erin. I'll be back in about an hour. I promise."

Kim could read him better than he hoped and didn't answer him.

"I'll be right back in Erin. I'm just going to walk him to the car."

Kim took Adam's hand in hers and led him toward the front door.

As soon as the front door closed behind them Kim turned to Adam with accusing eyes.

"Adam you promised you wouldn't go after Roman. Please just let it go."

Adam avoided looking into her eyes.

"I never promised you that Kim. I told you not to ask me to make you a promise I can't keep."

Kim stepped closer to him and cupped his face in her hands. She pulled his face toward her, forcing him to look at her.

"Adam, please? I just want to put this behind us. Roman doesn't matter."

Adam's eyes flared.

"Kim, I won't let him get away with what he did to you."

Kim's hands fell from his face and she clutched his shirt almost desperately and Adam's anger dissipated. Tears of panic began to well in her eyes and it broke his heart.

Adam wrapped his arms around her protectively and pulled her close to him.

"Kim, please don't cry." He begged her softly.

"Adam, please." Kim murmured his name into his mouth as she kissed him in hope of convincing him to abandon his hopes of revenge. He sank into her, losing himself in her sweet taste. He loved her so much he found it hard to breath sometimes.

Erin opened the door at that moment and admired the couple wrapped in one another's arms.

"Come on you two. Quit putting on a show for the neighbors."

They pulled their mouths away from each other but didn't let go of one another. Adam whispered softly.

"I love you, Kim. It will be all right I promise."

Kim looked worriedly at Adam as Erin pulled her inside the apartment and shut the door.

Adam looked at the door a moment, his eyes darkening.

He lifted his hand and touched the door softly.

"I'm sorry Kim." He whispered. "Please forgive me."

And with that he turned and walked down the front steps and went in search of Roman.

Jay pushed the grocery cart through the store as he looked down at Evie in her car seat as she watched her daddy with a smile.

"What do you think Ev? Peanut Butter Captain Crunch, or Frosted Flakes?" Jay asked holding up the cereal boxes.

Everly narrowed her brow before her face turned into a smile and she squealed with delight.

"Both?" Jay said "Both works for me"

Jay tossed the boxes into the bottom of the buggy and walked down the aisle as another cart came around and almost hit him.

"Sorry" Jay said as the person pushing the cart came the rest of the way around the corner.

"Hi Jay"

Jay's lips turned into a slow smile as he looked at the person in front of him.

"Hi Allie"

A/N

I don't really know where to begin when I say this, so I'm just going to say it. I started this fic out of my love for Linstead and Chicago PD. I know by all means that this story isn't perfect. But I am writing it from the way I think things would happen if they were to happen on the show. I know that Roman really wouldn't hurt Kim. But, when someone has an addiction, they quickly become someone that you don't like. I also know that Erin most likely wouldn't forget her birth control shot and therefore, Everly probably wouldn't exist. But the stresses of life can make something as simple as a birth control shot easy to forget. I don't claim to be a writer. I'm not in any way an heir to the Dick Wolf fortune. I'm a 26 year old pre-school teacher with a husband and a dog who weighs as much as me. I know that my story isn't always factual, I know that there's typos and misspelled words. But there's also a lot of heart in this too. All of you who write know how hard it is to put something out there for other people to judge. But to tell me that you just flat out hate my story and attack me is a waste of your time. There are plenty of other amazing stories on here. And while I do appreciate both positive and not so always positive reviews. I don't appreciate unkindness. I'm just writing this from my perspective. Sorry to make you all read this Author's Note, but I just needed to get it off of my chest.

I don't know about ya'll but I can't wait for the crossover. It's going to be amazing. I think it's on track to be the best one yet. Angry Halstead, is sexy Halsted.

Here's to hoping it leads Erin and Jay back together.
