Chapter 48: What Is Required Of You

Tara’s POV

Rena left me standing in front of the door for a moment, and the image of her half-hidden smile lingered in my mind before the imposing figure of the large oak doors overtook it. The guards on either side of the door stood still, as though they were waiting for me to move before they did anything.

It was only when I took a deep breath and took a step forward that the guard closest to me, the one on my right, moved towards the doors and pushed one open for me. I gave him a weak, unguarded smile, and there was a curt nod from him for a moment as though he could understand my feelings.

I walked through the threshold into the study, and my eyes darted everywhere and then toward the woman sitting on the couches in the middle of the room. The walls, both in front of me and to my right, were lined with bookshelves—it was one of the messier studies in the house, and I wondered if perhaps this might’ve been her favorite one.
