Chapter 54: The Stakes Are Raised

Tara’s POV

I stared wide eyed at the boy who had shot forward from the tree and wrapped himself around Victor, who in turn stared at me with just as shocked an expression.

“Hey,” I called out to the boy gently as I tried to pull him from Victor. But the boy’s grip around my mate’s waist was steeled and he only turned his head lightly to look at me. Wide, bright blue eyes stared at me, shining with tears and blood below it. “What’s your name, huh?”

I pushed his hair back, jet black and soft, covered in leaves and sticks. He didn’t seem much younger than we were, maybe fifteen or sixteen, but the fear in his eyes made him look younger.

“Jasper,” he whispered, his voice coming out stuttered and soft. “Are they gone?”
