Chapter 71: You’ve Always Been Tara

Tara’s POV

I swallowed hard and took in a deep breath. “When I was captured, Luke would visit my cell,” I began, and watched as his body tensed. But he didn’t move away from me, he didn’t move an inch. He just listened. “He… would taunt me with the same thing, over and over and over again. He said he knew about my past.”

“About Kate and your step-father? How would he know that?” Victor asked, and I shook my head.

“No, not them. Further back… he said he knew what happened with me and my birth parents.” I watched as Victor dissected the information.

“He could have been lying.” Victor suggested in an attempt, I knew, to soothe the anxiety that was slowly beginning to build up inside of me. But I shook my head in disagreement.

“He wasn’t,” I told him. “I was listening to his heartbeat the entire time. It didn’t go up, and it didn’t go down. It was steady the entire time, Victor, he had to be telling the truth.”

“Yeah, or he’s just a really good liar, Tara.”
