November

I recall late November, holding my breath

The sun is high in the sky when she wakes up. A message waiting for her from Karter, telling her how weird it feels to be leaving so soon after moving here. She sighs, willing tears not to come, but they do. Hard and fast, and it feels like her rib cage is closing in on her as she struggles to breathe. she can't get out of bed, no matter how much she tells herself this is just a hiccup in her day, that it will all get better with time. She lays there, drowning in her own tears as the day drags on.

Marie calls her to check in later in the day, and she's managed to stop crying, even making her way from the bed to the couch. They chat away for a bit, distracting her from what's happening until she gets a text from Karter, letting her know he's made it safe and is settling in. She ends the call with Marie so she can phone Karter. He greets her happily, ready to tell her how beautiful the city is.
