"You're pathetic!" You took another kick to the gut and coughed. Then a punch to the face.

"W...why...?" The boys all scoffed and snickered. "Because," the leader said, "you're different. And different makes you a freak. I mean, what kind of guy likes guys?"

You tried to stand when someone stomped their foot on your back. You fell to the floor and winced. "Dif-different is better than what you are," you coughed.

"What did you say, freak?!"

Someone jerked your head up and you met with a set of cold, sky-blue eyes. "I'll make you regret ever saying that." They threw your head down and spat at you.

"Let's go. I'm getting tired." And with that the gang of boys left laughing. "Why..."

Why you? Why this? ..

You pushed yourself up with a grunt. Blood dripped from your mouth as you leaned against a trash can. "Maybe...maybe they're right..."

You walked up the school steps with your hood over your head. The laughter and chatter of your fellow classmates filled your ears. But only one voice stood out.

"(Y/n)!"

You hesitated. Should...should you turn around and face him? Or should you just keep on walking?

You paused. A hand grasped your shoulder and you blushed immediately. "H-hey, what's wrong?"

You bit your lip and kept your gaze to the front. You swallowed the lump in your throat. "Hey...Nath."

Said boy furrowed his brows and stepped in front of you, stopping you from moving. "Hey, what's wrong? Are-wait a second...what's that?" He went to touch your face when you slapped his hand away.

"Don't. Just...please," you pleaded. Nathaniel sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Let me guess, they beat you up again?"

Silence was the only answer he got. "Why didn't you tell me sooner? Here," he said grabbing your hand and leading you away from the croud. "Let's see if we can't get that bruise treated."

He flashed you a smile causing your cheeks to redden. You shoved your hands in your pockets and followed him. "Nathaniel..."

He hummed as you came to his house. "I...I have something I want to confess..." He opened the door and led you inside.

"What is it,"he asked sitting the two of you down on the couch. You averted your gaze and drew a deep breath.

Before you could utter a word Nathaniel placed your hand in his and gave you a look of reassurance. "It's ok, just tell me." You smiled a little before pulling your hand away.

"I...I want to change things...about myself." Suddenly the atmosphere changed. It was darker. Nathaniel's eyes dimmed.

"You...what?" His voice was shaky and his body hunched a little. "J-just my apoearance! I'm tired of people bullying me for what I act and look like! If I looked more-"

"No! Absolutely not! You are changing a single thing about yourself, do you hear me?!" You flinched from his sudden tone of voice. His breathing was heavy and a few tears cascaded down his cheeks.

"I...I care about you too much for you to do that to yourself." His words made your heart skip a beat. "You're my best friend, (Y/n). If you did that I wouldn't ever forgive you."

And there it was. Of course he only cared about you as a friend.

"A-alright...I won't change myself."

"You filthy rat! Get up!" The guy kicked you again while another cut your hair. "Maybe now you'll act like a guy."

"That's enough," came a loud voice. Your eyes, glossed over, could only see a tall male slowly walking towards you. A low chuckle escaped his lips.

"Leave the rest to me."

The other guys hurried off and left you alone with the male. He kneeled down in front of you and smirked. "Why can't you just act more like us?"

You spat at his face. "Because you're a jerk." The guy wiped his face and the last thing you saw was his hand before he knocked you out.

"So sick of this," you mumbled as you rushed up the steps. You hoped you wouldn't run into Nathaniel and have him inspect your face again. You were too embarrassed to look him in the eye.

As you entered the school you glanced around and loosened up seeing no sign of the red head. You walked to class but got stopped by someone grabbing your arm. "(Y/n), h-hey. Wait."

You turned to see Nathaniel looking at you worriedly. You brushed his hand away and started walking again. "Hey! Wait!"

He caught up to you and pulled on your sleeve. "(Y/n), wait!" You threw him aside and heard him hit the ground.

You looked at him and glared. "Why can't you just leave me alone?! I'm sick and tired of your stupid mouth, saying 'It's alright, or 'Don't worry about it' when you're only making things worse! Just-ugh! Leave me alone!" You clutched your head and your breathing quickened.

Images of those boys flashed through your head and before you could think you blurted out the worst thing you could have ever imagined. And as soon as you said it you regretted it. But you could only turn away, too ashamed of yourself.

Rain mixed with the tears coming from Nathaniel's eyes. On his knees, in the rain, Nathaniel sobbed to himself. His heart felt like it was being jabbed at with a knife.

It hurt. It pounded. And he was heartbroken.

"I...l...love you...(Y-Y/n)..."

"Nathaniel...?" The sudden voice made Nathaniel flinch. He scrambled to his feet and backed away.

"M-Marinette," his voice squeaked. Her lips tugged downward and her eyes softened. "What's wrong?"

She took a step closer. He moved back. His body shook as more tears pooled from his eyes.

"L-le-leave me a-alone..." But she didn't. She took another step closer.

"Nathan..." She caught his sleeve and stared into his eyes. "Please...I wanna help you."

She wiped a tear from his face and gave him a sympathetic smile. It was quiet between them for a moment before Nathaniel spoke up. "What was that," Mari asked softly.

"P-please don't leave me..."

And as soon as he said that he felt a pair of arms wrap around him. His eyes gushed out their remaining tears as he felt the warmth of another person. He'd never hugged anyone-including you-and it felt good, like there was finally someone who cared, someone who understood, someone whom he could trust.
