~~~CAT'S POV~~~
Whatever happens to my plan of resigning? Well, I'm still here sitting at my desk. My boss is in a meeting, surprisingly, he didn't require me to be there since it started an hour ago and I just came because I am still taking his daughters to school every morning. He is still cold and aloof and intimidating and irritating but he started to become a little bit considerate.
Aside from that, I am now starting to doubt if he is making any effort in finding a permanent nanny for Aenid and Faye. Is that hard to find? I mean, there are a lot of agencies out there that offer qualified nannies for his daughters. Or he is just too picky?
It's been two weeks now since I met Aenid and Faye and I am getting too attached to them. And it is terrifying. I am worrying because honestly, I would rather be their nanny than work for their father. And really, that is terrifying.
As I sat here on my desk working on my computer with my barefoot raised on a footstool to relieve it from two hours of walking around on heels, I heard someone clear his throat.
When I raised my head, a wide smile immediately broke on my face when I saw my former boss standing in front of my desk. And he is not alone because he has his wife with him.
How did I not notice their arrival?
"Mr. and Mrs. Vann!" I am truly delighted to see my former boss visit the office.
I walked around my table to greet them and Mrs. Vann immediately pulled me into a tight embrace like she always did.
"I'm so happy to see you. I hope my son is not giving you a headache." Mrs. Vann said.
'Uhm...nope! Definitely not. Because he is not giving me just a headache but a body ache.' I was tempted to reply with that but know that I should not.
Instead, I shook my head and said, "No, he is not."
"I hope he is not giving you an idea to quit the job because Mr. Gonzales fired his newly hired assistant and hinted to me again that he needed an assistant that was as efficient as you, " Mr. Vann said when it was his turn to hug me.
I don't know how it happens that these two people who hold the highest position in this company treat me with such kind regards. Like I am a friend. I know that some are raising a brow at me because of how my former boss and his wife treat me but I don't care.
I didn't answer my former boss's last statement and just gave him an awkward smile making the two of them look at each other.
"Oh! I am sorry. Please have a seat." Before they could ask me further questions about how their son treats me, I led them inside my boss's office to sit. Once they were seated, I excused myself to get them drinks.
I return with a tray in my hand with two cups of tea that I know Mr. and Mrs. Vann preferred. Good thing I still keep some of their preferred tea in my drawer. They are the only ones in this company that drink tea. Mostly preferred coffee or juice. Even my new boss prefers coffee.
Once I put down the cups of tea on the coffee table, I hugged the tray and stayed standing in front of them. "Mr. Vann is still in the meeting room but it will probably be nearing its end any minute. Do you want me to inform him of your presence?" I asked.
I saw Mr. Vann take a sip of the tea and then put it back on the coffee table while Mrs. Vann placed her cup on the saucer that was in her other hand.
"Oh, you don't have to. We are not in a hurry. We just drop by to see how things are going. We can wait for him here." Mr. Vann replied and I just nodded my head.
"Why don't you sit down and chat with us for a while." Mrs. Vann motioned me to sit on the sofa behind me. I smiled and did what she said, wondering why they suddenly decided to visit. Was it a planned visit?
"We heard that you are taking our granddaughters to school in the morning and picking them up in the afternoon. You are even spending a couple of minutes with them."
Though I am not surprised that they knew about that, I felt a little bit awkward by the way Mrs. Vann said that and the way they looked at me with anticipation.
"Yes, while Mr. Vann hasn't found a permanent nanny for them," I replied.
Mrs. Vann's expression turned soft while Mr. Vann dropped his head and focused his attention on the teacup that was now in his hand.
"I know it is not in your job description but thank you for looking after our princesses even for just a few hours in a day. We appreciate it and even though Nate doesn't show it, I'm sure he does as well." Mr. Vann said appreciatively.
I shook my head and smiled at them. "It's okay. I don't mind. Mr. Vann is not demanding that I work extra hours to do that. So, I guess that should be fine. Not that I don't like working overtime."
"By the way, how do you find Aenid and Faye?" I heard Mrs. Vann ask, making me grin widely at the thought of the two lovely princesses.
"They are wonderful kids. I found them especially endearing." Okay, did I just admit that I'm in love with my boss's daughters? Based on Mr. and Mrs. Vann's delighted expression, I guess I did.
Mrs. Vann didn't hide her delight after hearing what I thought of their granddaughters. Now that is suspicious. "Good!" She clasps her hands in front of her chest while nodding. "Because I heard that they like you as well. We visited them last night and they have nothing but praises for you. They even wished you to be their permanent nanny."
Wow. I don't mind becoming their nanny from being an executive assistant if that means being away from my new boss, I mean, those kids were so wonderful and they treat me so well that I want to keep them.
I just smiled not knowing what to say. "That's sweet of them."
"I am not surprised. My family seems to have a special spot for you." Mr. Vann commented.
'Well, except for your son who seems to be enjoying torturing me.' I disagree internally.
"I remember the first time my wife met you, she immediately fell in love with you." Mr. Vann continued making me feel uncomfortable being the topic of this conversation.
"You are right, hon. There is something about her that pulls me towards her. You know, some kind of an attachment." She then brings the teacup towards her lips. Then she peeks behind the teacup and continues. "I was hoping that my son would feel that same kind of attachment."
Seriously?!
If I am drinking tea, right now, it's either I spit it all at them or I choke to death. But I must admit that I did blush at Mrs. Vann's last comment. But then, why would she say that? Why would she think that way? And why is Mr. Vann not saying anything?
I have to think of a way to divert the topic away from me.
Then I remembered something. "Ehem, Aenid said that Faye will turn six in a couple of days?"
"Oh yes!" Mrs. Vann immediately straightened and put down the teacup back on the coffee table. "Those kids are growing too fast, right hon."
"Mm...you're right." Mr. Vann just nodded his head but I noticed that he became suddenly deep in thought.
"Do you need help in the preparation of the party?" I asked, eager to divert their attention.
Mrs. Vann shook her head and replied in a sad tone. "You don't have to, Cat. My son prefers that they celebrate Faye's birthday with just the three of them."
"Oh, is that what Faye prefers?" I asked not intending to sound nosy, but I just wanted to know what will make Faye happy for her birthday.
Mr. Vann sighed heavily. "We don't know what she wants. I don't know if that is because she doesn't like parties or she is just used to not having it every year."
I furrowed my brows in confusion.
"You see, Nate's wife died while giving birth to Faye. So, instead of celebrating Faye's birthday in an imposing way, they prefer it simple and just the three of them." Mrs. Vann explained, making me bite my lower lip.
Surely, when Aenid said that they don't have a mother, the thing that crossed my mind was she must've left them or probably dead though I didn't hope for the latter.
But I didn't expect it to be worse. Their mother died the same day that Faye was born. And I immediately felt sorry for my boss. He must've hurt a lot for losing the love of his life. Somehow deep inside me, I felt something that I should not feel. I feel envious. Envy towards his wife.
Now I understand why he seems to be grumpy all the time, he has lost someone that once upon a time completed his world. Now his world probably feels empty. I know because I feel the same way when my mother died.
That moment, seeing her lifeless, I felt hopeless and empty. It's like the whole world banishes along with her. I have nothing but her but now she is gone.
But, that's not the same with my boss. He still has Aenid and Faye. He must've lost his wife but she left him with two little angels to fill his empty world.
While I have no one.
I realized that I'd been deep in my thoughts when I was startled when the door of the office opened to reveal my boss. He always looks dashing and I don't know why I feel that his cold and aloof demeanor makes him look hot.
Ehem. Erase that in my head, please.
His eyes landed on me and I immediately blushed in embarrassment because I was caught thinking of him as if he could read my mind. I shook my head and stood up.
"Mom, Dad, why are you here?"
Seeing that his attention was now on his parents, I excused myself.
