Chapter Six

After a long day of work, Kane was on his way home. He sat behind in the car, while Darian drove.

He was lost in thoughts and couldn't stop thinking about the beautiful young girl he met in his office, her beautiful voice and the shocked look on her face. He could tell that she had recognized him right away. Just when he thought that he could finally escape the tortures of what he had done to her, it had returned as like a hit on the back of his head.

He wondered how he would deal with the matter. The least he could do now to calm the situation was to apologize. He wondered if she would ever forgive him but he had to try anyway, maybe then the past could leave him alone and his conscience wouldn't judge him anymore.

At home, Caitlin laid Sultan on the sofa to rest, while she went to prepare the meal he requested. He looked so exhausted and famished and she felt sorry for him.

He had to spend all day at the day- care because of her. She could not bear to see him suffer like this. She had promised to give him the best life, the kind she never had growing up but she hadn't been able to keep that promise lately.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she thought about everything. No matter how hard she tried, she could never forget her painful past. It always found ways to come back to her like a recurring nightmare.

After preparing a delicious pasta boiled in tomato sauce, she woke Sultan up and bathed him. The boy was still so sleepy. She dried him up and dressed him in a nice blue pajama with colorful dinosaurs drawn all over it in a pattern. She combed his soft baby hair and for a moment, she saw how much he resembled his father. He had all his facial qualities, in fact he was like a carbon copy of Kane. Caitlin felt like crying afresh and Sultan noticed the tears in his mother's eyes. He cupped her face with his little hands and stared at her lovingly.

"Mummy….mummy are you okay?" he asked softly in the cutest voice and she smiled and nodded.

"Yes baby…I'm fine. Mummy's gonna be fine." she said, wiping her eyes.

"But…you're crying." he said, his little cute face etched with worry.

"Mommy just had a rough day at work, that's all." she smiled and he beamed, revealing the sets of little milk teeth that had just grown out of his gum. They hugged warmly and headed to the dining area to have their dinner.

That night, Kane couldn't sleep. He tossed and turned all night on the bed. It was that girl. Her image tortured him. Her cries echoed in his mind. The echoing cries of an unseen child tortured him even more and it was pure horror. He woke up with a start but it was still dark. He sighed and turned on the lights. Sitting at the edge of his bed, he thought about his nightmares which troubled him too frequently. They were always the same, but had a slight difference from the previous nightmares.

He was certain that it was because of that girl, but where did the distressed cries of a child come from? He could still hear it echoing somewhere in his mind. He knew it would be difficult to sleep, so he stayed awake the rest of the night in his study.

The next day was Friday. Caitlin was glad it was so that she would spend the weekend with Sultan. She also wanted to surprise him by taking him out to a beautiful theme park. He would be so excited for sure.

At work that day, she performed so well to make up for the previous day and Matilda was quite impressed. She tagged her the most hard working cleaning staff in the company and the other cleaners really envied her strength. She also sent reports of each of the workers, including Caitlin. She couldn't forget to miss out the details on how hardworking she really was.

Kane went through the reports and was mesmerized by hers. He couldn't help but smile slightly at how much Matilda praised her. He looked at the passport photo of her beside the report. She was so beautiful and her eyes were bold and attractive. He couldn't stop staring at her. Now he was full of regrets for what he had done to her. He sighed and rubbed his forehead when Darian came in.

"That young girl….Caitlin Rowel, bring her to my office immediately."

Darian nodded and left. When Caitlin was told that the CEO sent for her, her heart raced. She tried to find an excuse to refuse but couldn't. She almost felt like jumping out the window and running for her life, but she couldn't do that either. She was left with no choice but to follow Darian to his office.

When she arrived and their eyes met, her heart paced as the bitter memories flashed before her eyes. Rage filled her senses. He offered her a seat, then Darian left them alone. He couldn't take his eyes off her. She glowed so beautifully and he could also tell that she was enraged.

"Miss Caitlin….it's quite nice to see you again…i was surprised to see that you worked here….i had no idea."

He didn't know what to say any more.

"Look, I know that you're upset about everything that happened two years ago….i'm very sorry that I did such horrible things to you. I wasn't myself that day. I'm sorry." he said softly.

Caitlin couldn't hold back the tears that tried to force their way out. Her eyes were so wet and soon she burst into tears. Kane didn't understand why, but he was saddened by her sobs.

"You…you ruined my life! You ruined it! You have no idea what I've been through because of you! I had to suffer so much…I had to suffer, all alone in pain…and now you're telling me that you're sorry?! I don't care if you're my boss, but you're only that under this roof. I won't let you use me again! I'm resigning! I quit!"

Kane was shocked. She was really quitting a job she just had, Because of him?

"But….i said I'm sorry. Besides all that happened two years ago….i'm really sorry about that. I can double your salary if you want…or even triple!"

Caitlin stared at him in disgust. After everything he made her go through, he thought he could just compensate her with money?!

"I don't need your money! And I will never forgive you for what you did to me!"

With that, she ran out, banging the door loudly behind her. Kane was taken aback. None of this was a surprise though. He knew she would never forgive him so easily. He sighed and rubbed his forehead, then Darian walked in.

"So, how did it go?"

"she resigned."

Darian was shocked.
