First Day Craziness

Ivy wakes to Zola crying and Cristina and Meredith stomping around. She stumbles out and sees everyone else standing in the hallway.

"Why are we all standing here?"

"Seeing when the crying will stop," Jackson leans against the door.

"This is so not how I needed to start today," Ivy whines.

April's eyebrows scrunch, "Why?"

Ivy looks at her, "New interns start today. Which means, I have a crap ton of planning and organizing to do. Not to mention, scheduling."

Lexie perks up, "I'm kind of excited to get my interns."

"Just don't let them start cutting each other up," Ivy jokes, heading back into her room.

"How did you hear about that?"

Ivy keeps mumbling her chief resident speech as she walks down the stairs and meets Owen and Derek, "Hey."

"Hey, you ready-" Derek starts to ask her.

"Yeah, yeah. I need to go up there, see you in a few minutes," she dismisses her brother.

She makes her way to the cafeteria where the fifth year residents and attendings are having breakfast. Ivy makes her way to the front of the room and starts, "Good morning. May I have everyone's attention?"

Only the attnedings look at her, which she suspected would happen, so she adds, "Hey, remember me? I'm the person in charge of scheduling your surgeries."

Every resident gives her their full attention, "Thats what I thought. Anyways, welcome to the final year of residency. This breakfast is the only chance where all fifth year residents and all attendings are in the same room, so use this time wisely. Residents, find your mentor, ask questions, set yourself up for a great end to your residency and prepping for your boards. Now, eat, converse, find your mentor. I'll be over at that table if you have any questions for me."

Ivy steps off the stool she was using and made her way to Owen and Derek, "How'd I do?"

"Impressive. Got their attention without forcing them. Didn't back down, asserted yourself. I'm glad I chose you, Shepherd," Owen compliments, walking away.

"He's right, you're a pro at this already. Go, find your friends and enjoy your new position," Derek pushes her away.

She sees the chief walk in and she goes to him, "Do you have any advice for is fifth years, cause I can get their attention easily."

"They know what they're doing, they just need to not kill anyone," he replies walking away.

"Hm, chiefly advice. Got to make note of that for the future," Ivy mumbles to herself, heading towards Jackson and April.

"What did you two think?" Ivy asks them, some of her nervous energy shining through.

Jackson laughs, "You did great. Adding that subtle threat was a nice touch by the way."

They fistbump, "Thanks. I knew I wasn't going to get everyone's attention right away, so I planned accordingly."

"You did much better than I could have ever. Hunt made the right choice for sure," April assures her.

"Good. Let's hope that stays true for the rest of the year."

Ivy stands in front of the residents out in the ambulance bay as a few of the attendings head out, "We're going to the scene of an on-site amputation woman's trapped under her car. You guys are gonna get swamped with bodies. Shepherd, you're in charge till I get back. You know to do."

She nods, "Yes, sir, good luck. Go save some lives and we'll do the same here."

Callie passes her and squeezes her shoulder, "Impressive."

Ivy walks back and stands next to Lexie as Meredith comes out, Cristina turns to her, "You know what? There's bound to be piles of head trauma. Derek's gonna have to talk to you."

"I got fired."

"What?"

Meredith eyes Alex, "The chief fired me."

Cristina turns to him, "You son of a bitch. I mean, are you happy now?"

"Hey! Enough. We have patients on the way, deal with this on your own time. Meredith, I'm sorry, but I need you to clear out. We have multiple traumas on their way in and you'll just be in the way. Go get Zola," Ivy commands, moving to stand next to Bailey.

Jackson, Lexie, and April all look at her impressed, Alex looks thankful, and Cristina and Meredith look betrayed. Of course, Ivy misses all of this. Bailey murmurs to her, "Never thought you could be bitchy."

"Its sort of a family trait. One I don't utilize all that often, but when the situation calls for it, it comes in handy."

The first ambulance pulls up and Ivy turns to Alex, "You want to go to the scene? That ambulance is heading there and it will get Yang off your back."

Alex nods so Ivy pushes him towards it. She then turns to the approaching one, "42 year old female. Lost consciousness en route. Unable to get airway secondary to tracheal injury. Last B.P. is 89/60."

"Don't worry. We'll figure something out," Ivy hears Cristina tell Meredith.

Ivy then checks to see the next ambulance coming in and sighs. Great first day, residents fighting and a huge trauma where Hunt leaves her in charge. What could possibly go wrong?

Ivy starts overseeing treatments when Bailey walks up to her, "I hope you've got me with a decent resident. I'm not babysitting any first day, first years today."

"Yeah, originally with Meredith, but now you get Kepner," she gestures for the girl, "April, you're with Bailey today."

"Dr. Shepherd, three more coming in," a nurse tells her.

Ivy nods, taking a breath before heading out.

Ivy walks out and looks around for a resident, she sees Jackson standing with Derek and Mark, "Hey, Jackson. You free? We have a new kid in bed three."

"Kinda busy, Ivy," He tells her.

Ivy nods, turning to go find someone else but pauses when she hears Mark, "Yeah, kinda busy turning this guy into Frankenstein. Go. Go. Make yourself useful."
