Chapter 28: Withdrawing

Commander Conner stomped his foot onto the steel floor. Bryce paused, and took a slow glance over his shoulder. He stumbled backwards and looked at the bridge of Trevon's nose. Less than a second passed before Bryce remembered, and gave a clear, firm salute.

"I gave my orders," he reminded Bryce. "You'll follow them in my presence."

Bryce released a slow whistle, but turned his head.

"Captain Nader," he said into his wrist communicator. "I've been given orders to withdraw."

"With all due respect, sir," Captain Nader said. "If we surrender, we've no idea what'll happen to my kids."

Alayna mouthed a silent command: "Let me talk to him."

Bryce extended his arm bearing wrist communicator.

"Their chances are better if you surrender than if you keep the fight going," Alayna said.

"I hope you're right," Captain Nader relented. "I'm putting this on autopilot and sending a mass transmission right now."

"Good work," Bryce said.
