Day Thirteen #10

Anyone would be surprised by the sudden turn of events which happened just as the fight had come to an end.

A dying creature was usually at its most deadly when it was still able to cling onto life and still had the willpower to fight.

All it took was a single final use of the remains of its life to exact its vengeance and bring down its enemy along with it.

Battles between different creatures were usually brutal and ended up with casualties on both sides unless there was a clear difference in power, abilities and experience.

The Murgles may have been more cunning and able to exploit certain areas during combat but in their frenzied state, it did lessen how carefully they approached the battle.

They suffered losses but their way of fighting had provided them enough opportunities for at least one of them to land a killing blow.

The large serpent was always the one with the advantage in power and size while possessing much stronger defences so it was natural that it was able to last so long against them.

If it had not been for the single strike to its eye then everything could have ended very differently.

That was the manor turning point in the battle which allowed the Murgles to come out victorious.

The main issue was that those remaining near the corpse of the serpent had not been careful enough to check if it had died yet.

They were too busy basking in their victory and cheering which only helped the serpent to know where each of them were exactly.

Even in its weakened and fragile state, the serpent had been able to accurately bite onto and hold onto the body of the Murgle.

The embers of life within the serpent burned out shortly after but it did not go towards death with the thought of dying such an unjust death without seeking one final act of revenge.

Its fangs pierced into the body of the Murgle and its venom quickly spread through its body causing it to drop weakly onto the ground convulsing.

Inis watched the whole battle from a safe distance and showed a slight look of approval towards what had happened.

She admired those that could just use their bodies and abilities to their fullest in order to defeat another opponent even if it meant pulling their enemy down with them.

There was a certain ferocity and wildness behind it all that was very unlike how she fought.

Perhaps she was lacking a little when it came to having such a fierce resolve within herself so she came to admire and envy such creatures.

Her way of combat was making use of her knowledge and experiences to lessen the overall difficulty of an opponent she was fighting.

There were very few times where she solely relied on her own power to confront an enemy meeting their attack with her own since that was not her style during her days as a dungeon hunter.

There were very few times when she let loose her abilities to the fullest unless she was cornered with no other option to fight her way out them later she had allies to back her up to provide opportunities for her to strike.

Seeing the triumphant screams of the Murgles had helped to make Inis have some kind of desire to triumph over her enemies in a similar way since it would be satisfying for do but she quickly pushed that thought away.

She started to slowly climb down as the remaining Murgles began to feast on the serpent without caring about their surroundings.

It was much too big to carry back with their smaller numbers so they would have to eat and take what they could.

There were five Murgles that were chomping down on parts of the body trying to bite past its tough scales while others dug into the wounds left behind from the battle.

A nearby Murgle was shaking on the ground as it was in a dire situation but nothing could happen to save its life.

Its allies seemed to have realised the fate of their comrade so they did not try to offer any aid.

Their sole focus was on the meal in front of them.

If there was any kind of diet they had then it was quite wide, it ranged from anything to fish, other animals and even humans so they were not too picky when it came to what they ate.

The meat that contained such high traces of Aether Energy was like a delicacy to them so they tried to eat as much as they could possibly contain within them.

Just as they were sinking their teeth into the serpent and savouring the taste of their victory, there was a sudden pain that spread out in the back of one of the five remaining Murgles.

A metal blade pierced through its back and easily dig deep into its body before being pulled out with little resistance. "Mrr!"

The Murgle fell forward and slumped onto the corpse of the serpent while the others turned around to look towards the source of the noise.

The curved blade was removed just in time to parry the weapon of the Murgle knocking it to the side, she spun around following the rotation as the other curved blade came around towards the neck of the Murgle. "Two."

After cutting the throat of the nearest Murgle that attacked first, she quickly jumped back avoiding another weapon that had been thrown towards her previous location like a throwing javelin.

It missed its target just a little allowing Inis to gain a little distance once again as she sheathed one curved blade.

She reached down onto the small pouch on her waist and pulled out something before throwing it forward.

A small throwing knife found its way into the body of the attacking Murgle causing it to let out a cry. "Mrl!"

More throwing knives were thrown out in a very short time which caused it to be covered with wounds before succumbing to its injuries.

Those around and behind it had got caught up in the attacks as they were pierced a little too by any other throwing knives that had been thrown out towards another target.

Their movements were becoming slower and less energetic as they had already gone through a battle previously.

The blood loss and sustained injuries taken before had played a major role in dulling their movements allowing Inis to increase the burden on them with each new wound they sustained.

One after another collapsed letting out a cry before dying lying still on the ground, Inis approached their bodies lying there and inserted the curved blade in her hand into the throat of each one before cleaning it, collecting everything and then moving onto the next task.
