Everything hurt, and I felt as if several bones were broken. I tried to remember exactly what happened. I tried to remember what Sara and I were talking about. What were we doing in the car together? I shifted and snapped something in my shoulder. Fuck.

Abruptly, it all came flooding back. My memories played back in slow motion reverse. I blacked out. Glass and metal were shattering and smashing together. The car was caving inward. There was a truck, some kind of big green truck headed towards us. I remembered the panic, wanting to reach for Sara but not having time.

I couldn’t see his face, but it had to be him. Of course, it was him. Antonio Marino. That motherfuck had just tried to kill us. That could have been a risky move in this business regardless, much less when we were trying for peace arrangements. I would have almost admired his tenaciousness, except that his bullheaded arrogance almost killed my wife.
