I saw that look on the doctor's face, and I knew something was wrong. I fucking knew it.

I'd seen that look many times, on many doctors' faces, and it was never good news. Ever.

"This is taking a long time," the doctor said, regarding my wife, who was groaning in pain. "I don't like to do this, but, if things don't change soon, I'm going to have to perform a C-section."

Great, a fucking C-section. I hated the idea of Sara being cut open. I knew logically that this was something that happened sometimes during childbirth. Things went wrong, plans changed, yada yada yada.

That was all well and good if it was someone else's wife on the table. But we were talking about the love of my life here. Nobody was cutting her open without a good reason. Not while I still drew breath.

"How long are we talking?" I asked the doctor. "I mean, minutes? Hours? What's the time frame here?"
