Communication Cut

"Still no Penny?" A man asked the woman sitting at a desk holding an old landline phone. "No Penny.." she sighed and set it down. She then grabbed a radio off her hip and turned it to channel 5. "Penny Penny do you copy?" The woman asked but all she got was static. She waited a few minutes before trying again. "Penny Penny do you copy? This is June speaking do you copy?" She asked again but was answered with static. "Ma'am it's been a year now. I hate to say it but she's probably.....you know.." the man tried to say but he was glared down. "Don't tell me that. There's always a chance." This woman known as June snapped at him. She has long auburn hair that was streaked with grey pulled back in a low ponytail. She wore a clean grey long sleeve and black sweatpants with just socks. Since she didn't go outside much she didn't bother dressing in protective gear so pajamas was always the way to go for her.

"Do you think anything happened to the facility she ran in Georgia?" June asked, exhaustion lacing her voice. "If she's not responding then...probably..." the man sighed while leaning against June's desk. June sighed deeply and set the radio down on the desk. She laid her head down and was trying to think. Her thinking began to taper off into sleep before the drowsiness was chased away by the sound of her radio crackling. June shot up and grabbed it right as a familiar voice whispered through the static. "I copy I copy..it's Penny I copy.." she whispered.

"Penny! Oh my god! You're alive!" June's excitement echoed through the empty room. "Oh it's so nice to hear from you again.." Penny whispered. "Where are you?! What happened?! Are you ok!" June rattled off many questions and Penny tried her best to answer them. Penny took awhile to run through all the events of the past year. How her facility came crashing down, the mutants, how she met Mama William's group, everything. "Oh! I also think I possibly found something that can help make a cure!" Penny excitedly whispered and June's smile brightened once more. "What did you find?!" She asked, ecstatic that this war could possibly put to an end. "Ok so there's this guy in the group that I got adopted in and he was bitten weeks ago. He was fine sort of for weeks but these last two days he has been absolutely ravenous- he killed a mutant to eat it for fucks sake!" She whispered and took a moment to catch her breath. "But then he woke up this morning perfectly fine! Like the infection somehow just died." Penny quietly explained and June took a moment to register all of this.

"Ok ok, wow- that's- oh my lord- ok- so here's what we need to do I think" June began but had to pause so she could think of her words carefully. "Now I need you to try to convince them to come to Oregon. If there is a way to find a way to get rid of this infection then we have to take it." June told her. "Yes ma'am, I'll try to keep you updated but my radio is being all weird so I can't make any promises." Penny whispered. "Just please for the love of everything Penny. Be careful." June told her and Penny promised she would. "Over an out, I'll see you soon." Penny told her then turned her radio off.

Once Penny stopped talking June put her radio down on the desk. Her smiles remained as tears streamed down her cheeks. "Ma'am-" the man panicked but June leaned back in her chair. "We can finally end this Marshall." She giggled and quickly got up. "Marshal we could end this!!" She grabbed the big man's shoulders and shook him. "Can you believe it?! This could all be over!!" She exclaimed while yanking him into a hug. "We're almost done Marshall!!" She sobbed tears of joy and relief. The big man known as Marshall leaned down and hugged her as well. "We can actually go out safely now?..." he asked and June cupped his face. "Once Penny brings the guy she was talking about. We could make something that could kill the virus and then yes! We can walk out of these electric fences free!" She smiled and happily skipped around her office.

The only one who knew for now was going to be Marshall. She didn't want to spread the word just yet since she wants to make sure that they would actually get here first. June was fairly confident they would but you never know, anything could happen out there in the Deadlands. She was filled with so much joy at the fact of an old friend had finally responded to her once more and the fact that they were no longer going to be at a standstill on their research once Penny brings the group. "This war came finally be over Marshall" she smiled and sank back into her seat. He pulled up a chair next to her and listened to her talk about all the possibilities of what they could do after this cure was made. He didn't understand most of the sciency stuff she was talking about but it was nice to see her finally have confidence in something again.
