“Are you okay?” I asked.
I initially thought she called because she has some news she was excited to tell me but as soon as I heard her sniff, my stomach fell and my heart pounded in anxiety. “Mama, can I come home?”
“Of course, baby. What’s wrong? Did something happen?”
“No, Mama. Mara’s okay. I just want to go home now.”
I look at Jeremy who looks expectantly at me. “Okay, I’ll pick you up but it might take a while okay?”
“Okay, mama. Mara will wait.”
When I hang up the phone, I couldn’t bring my gaze back to Jeremy anymore and focused on checking any red-eye flights back to Florida.
“You’re leaving?” Jeremy said as he followed me to the couch.
“Yeah, I’m sorry,” I replied without looking up at him. “Something’s wrong. Mara is asking me to pick her up so I need to go back.”
“Alright, let me take care of everything.”
