CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY EIGHT
Whatever I expected Damien to say, it wasn’t this.
I’ve never heard such sincerity from him and it shakes me to the core. And it also makes me want to believe him.
It’s not like he has a reason to lie to me.
“After Sila, I just didn’t want to go through that again,” he murmurs. “Living this life, this fate is hard on me. You love, you lose, and you keep losing. It’s always been easy for me to keep the Righs, at some level of distance. I gave in with Sila and that was my mistake. I suffered for that even after she was gone. And just after a few meetings with you, it became apparent to me that it was going to be harder with you.”
He runs his hands over his face, looking weary for the first time since I met him.
“I didn’t think you would notice.”
I simply don’t know what to say right now. There is so much confusion inside of me that I am unable to sort through my feelings right now. My heart is throbbing in pain for both of us.
