Chapter 8: The Leap of Faith

Sophie and Ilaria

Miami - 1:35 AM

We’re not going to make it, Sophie thought. The wolf holding her had made an impossible leap from the edge of the building. The expanse of water beneath them—the mouth of the Miami River—had to be more than 300 hundred yards wide.

With her arms wrapped around his neck, she looked to the small open park he targeted on the opposite side of the river. There simply was no way.

But their arc up into the sky continued. The air whipped at her already cold skin. It felt like they were flying.

She looked up into the wolf’s face. His eyes burned an odd shade of yellow. His hair, sideburns, and eyebrows all matched the eyes. He didn’t appear nervous, just focused. It was a handsome face.

She looked to the park again as they closed in. Not only was the distance of the leap inconceivable, but the precision to land in a single grassy patch amidst the myriad highrises surrounding it, would be astonishing.
