Chapter 13: Divided Loyalties
Even if it was true, I still didn’t appreciate his frankness. No one ever spoke that way with me. Not unless I knew them well.
“I’m sorry, I…. I actually am a Catholic.” I could feel myself flushing, though, and hoped that my stutter wouldn’t be made so evident to him.
But he seemed like the observant type, the type to easily pick up on things.
“Are you sure?” He questioned skeptically. “What makes you so certain?”
I shrugged with careless indifference, meaning to do what I could to explain myself right away, but not knowing exactly how to do so.
“I believe in God… I always have… of course…”
But he saw right through me, straight to the core of my being. “That doesn’t necessarily make you a Catholic.”
I could feel myself turning red all over again. Who did this man think he was, spurring me on like this? It wasn’t fair that he dismissed practically every word that I uttered.
