Daniel sighed then nodded his head. He could sense the tension between them and so could Regina, but she didn't care. She was determined not to let him think he had the power in his hand and he could do whatever he wanted without remorse. Yes, she clearly made a mistake by asking for this arrangement or business proposal rather.
Daniel pushed himself forward while resting his hand on the table with a sigh again. "It's like you're forgetting something." He said, passing her an intimidating look that could make anyone pee on themselves.
She gulped deeply as she tried to hide the effect of his gaze on her. There was no way she would show him how scared she was.
"What am I forgetting?" She asked while raising her chin in a challenging way that amused Daniel. He hid a smile, he couldn't help but admit that she really had a sharp tongue and a smart mouth. She amused and amazed him in some ways that he couldn't comprehend.
"You're forgetting that I still have the power to build on that land and send your people away from there and anyone who still insists on staying or interjects with my plans would still get beaten up and remember you the last time what that led to, right?"
This made Regina nervous and scared. She could only remember how her father died and how her uncle was beaten to death. What would this mean now because she could see how serious he was. It was obvious that he had the power to do that and even more if she insisted on pushing further or getting him pissed.
What was she thinking? Why did she even believe she had a chance to win against this man, for Christ' sake?!.
"Wh- what would you do?" She asked nervously, even though he just said it, hearing it again and remembering everything that happened made her teary. It was just too painful to remember what happened and how it did.
"You heard me right, and if I were you, I would rethink before getting me pissed."
He stood up and walked over to her at a slow pace while giving her the feeling of being a prey. He reached where she sat and leaned down to whisper in her ear.
"If you don't give me the papers then I'll have no choice but to also do the opposite of our agreement, and you know quite well what that means," he said in a husky voice behind her ear.
She shivered, but fought the urge to turn to him or retaliate. God, how much she hated this man to the core.
She sighed and stood up, she walked out immediately without turning back. The tears she had been holding back for a while finally started dropping on her cheeks like a droplet of water on a window glass. Why was life hard? Why was she always suffering?
She cried silently as her back rested on the door of her room while she let the tears flood down her cheek effortlessly and endlessly. Her life was such a mess, and she just made it more complicated.
After she was done crying her heart out, she sat on the soft mattress and looked at something in front of her in a daze. She was in deep thoughts as she tried to think of what to do next.
Should she give him the papers he wanted or run away from here and go back to her people? Her aunty would probably mock her and mark her as desperate.
Desperate to leave the life mystery behind and go with the enemy. Yet, it was somehow true as she thought about it. She was indeed running from the reality of life, she couldn't stay in that village because of the memory that refused to become foggy and blurry in her head.
She just wished she could forget everything and that was why she chose to leave there in an attempt to at least forget what the place looked like.
She sighed and laid flat on the bed on her stomach. Her head rested on her hands as tears still fell down her cheeks. She could only see a dark, narrow road ahead of her. That would probably lead her to nowhere but her doom. She sighed, her life was not so great before, but now it is worse than before.
She closed her eyes and immediately dozed off, unknowingly.
She hissed when she woke up. Her hand went to touch her forehead like it would take the pain away or stop her throbbing head from aching in pain.
Still in her daze and struggling to stop her head from banging, she heard a knock and then the door got pushed open as a lady walked in. Regina immediately pretended to be asleep to see what the lady intended to do, but the lady dropped something on a table before walking out.
What was that? She asked herself. Her eyes snapped open when she heard the door closed gently. She sat up, probing herself with her elbows. She swung her legs down and her eyes searched the room swiftly until they landed on the table.
She furrowed her brows when she saw a platter of food on the table. Was the lady asked to bring this to her?
She looked at the door before walking over to the table. She picked up the spoon slowly and stared at it like it was something unknown.
Was he doing this for a different purpose? Did he have a motive for this? They just had an argument where he threatened her with the lives of her people, now he gave her food to eat.
Maybe this was his way of manipulating her, but why bother coaxing her when she was no fool?
Regina grew angry when she realized how she must've stooped so low by proposing that marriage. If only she had thought more deeply, then perhaps she wouldn't have been here.
No, she must leave here because she could clearly see what awaits her once she provides him the documents. He had already shown her what to expect from him, and she wouldn't make a bigger mistake by providing him those documents. She would rather die.
She looked at the door again with a dark expression and then back at the food as she thought of something.
