THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

I woke up because light was shining in my eyes.

I adjusted my pillow and turned to my side, bouncing gently on the bed when I did. I pulled the covers over my face to engulf me in darkness once again so I could go back to sleep.

Wait.

Pillow? Bed? Covers?

I sat up with my eyes wide open and looked around.

The pillow and covers were actually cloaks, but I was sleeping on a bed — a real bed! It had a wooden frame, and I was lying on the lattice of rope woven over the frame; that was why it was comfortable despite the absence of a mattress.

I was in a tiny room with a single worn dresser as its only furnishing aside from the bed. Sunlight filtered from the small window on the opposite wall, revealing the dust motes floating in the air.

Where on earth am I?

My brain was still in the process of waking up as I tried to make sense of the absurdity of my surroundings.
