Chapter 5

“Your highness, the king is awaiting your presence”, Kwofo announced as he came in.

“A minute”, I shouted as I made the last minute.

“Lead the way”, I motioned for him to proceed.

I’ve been sheltered my entire life, leaving the security of the palace walls when it’s required of me, which have only been twice.

The first was during my parent’s twentieth anniversary, and the second was when I was introduced to my people.

The idea of attending a school, far from home and without any magical power to brag about, made goosebumps erupt on my body.

It doesn't help the fact, that the school is populated by werewolves and vampires, as well as humans.

The blood-sucking friends are the most dangerous of the trio, and getting into trouble with one, gets you in trouble with all.

I don't understand why Father wants me to attend the school, despite knowing my powers are yet to be unleashed.

“We're here, my prince”, Kwofo bowed and left before I can stop him.

The only friend I have doesn't see me as one, but as a prince, to him being too high up in the existing state of affairs to be his friend.

The doors were opened by the guards standing beside it, “my prince”, they bowed.

I entered the room and the door was closed behind me.

Father was seating on this majestic chair, and the table in front of him was filled with an assortment of exotic foods.

Father likes showing off his opulence and wealth, even during our family's private times.

He smiled the moment I walked in.

I tried not to cower at his majestic presence as I walked confidently toward him, praying I won't embarrass myself in front of him.

Father hates weaknesses, especially when it comes from me.

That's why I do everything in my power not to exhibit weakness.

I get flustered and embarrassed when people focus their attention on me, I guess it's based on my little to no human contact when I was a little boy.

I walked up to him and kissed the ring on his third finger, a sign of my loyalty to my kingdom and monarch.

“Good morning, Father”, I bowed.

“Son, it's nice of you to join your old man”, he chuckled.

I dutifully sat on the chair nearest to his and sat waiting forever for his approval for me to start eating.

He took a bite of his food,” how can I refuse the invitation of my father to talk more of the king of the five kingdoms?”

He likes it when he's reminded he's the only reigning monarch of the five kingdoms.

“A son's obligations are towards his father and the society” I gave him a shy smile.

He nodded in approval, "well-said son, well said”.

I was only able to say my obligations were only to him and the society because my mom is no more, if she were to be alive, my duties will be towards her and not the society, my mom comes first before any other.

I took a bite of the food in acceptance of his invitation, it's rude not to accept a king's invitation to eat, it's seen as a sign of treason.
