At the birthday party, Ify arrived with her aunt. The first person that welcomed them was a lady that looked overly dressed for such occasion. Her makeup was extravagant. The lipstick came out too much, and her dress swept across the floor. If she was to stop holding it for a minute, she was either going to trip on it, or too many shoes would step on it.
“Temitope, how are you?” Mrs. Okafor asked when the young lady gave her a hug.
“I’m fine Mrs. Okafor. Who is she?” She asked pointing towards Ify. Mrs. Okafor smiled and held Ify’s hand pulling her slightly forward.
“She is my niece, Ifeoma”. Mrs. Okafor said. They she introduced the young lady, Temitope to Ify as Kehinde’s sister. They both shook hands while Mrs. Okafor asked Temitope her mother’s whereabouts.
“She’s in the kitchen area. I don’t know why she won’t leave the job of the caterers”. Temitope exclaimed.
Mrs. Okafor left leaving Ify with Temitope. She had gone to meet her friend, Mrs. Adewale, the governor’s wife. While Temitope bombarded Ify with questions like, which of her parent is related to Mrs. Okafor and why she choose to come to the birthday party with her.
“I didn’t choose to come here. My aunt thought it was good I come. And if you must know, Aunt Ada is my maternal aunt”. Ify said to Temitope.
Just then a masculine voice dragged their attention.
“Temi, what is the meaning of this?” It was K. He seemed to have just arrived as well.
“Whoa! The birthday boy is here!” Temitope said grinning.
“Why did you guys plan a birthday party without my consent?” K snarled at her. Temitope frowned.
“Kehinde, don’t you dare yell at me! If not for mom, I won’t be here. And I know you know that”. She said. Then she sighed. Looked at him disapprovingly and said,
“I remain your elder sister, do give me that respect”. She said walking away forgetting that Ify was left in her care.
Ify stood not knowing if she should go with Temitope or just find her own way around.
“You are Lanre’s friend right?” K asked seeing Ify standing before him. Ify nodded her head in confirmation. Then she went on to apologise to K on Lanre’s behalf.
“Look, I’m sorry for what Lanre did, refusing your proposal. She had no clue what she was doing. Like, she came home crying!”. Ify said.
K smirked. Then he told Ify that Lanre knew what she was doing, and that she should not try to make up anything for her friend.
“Lanre would not like what you just did. She is a woman with pride”. K said to her. Then he walked away. Ify sighed. It seem K was not going to listen to her. She decided to tour round and maybe find a place to sit down, somewhere quiet.
She picked a glass of drink from the tray carried about by the waiter. The party was more like a wedding party than a birthday party. She was judging from the number of people present, and their attires. She was sure they were men and women of calibers.
