Never Thought

Christian scoffed. It seems K still would not admit he loves Lanre. Perhaps he won’t even choose her at the end. If this whole thing is over, he will leave the country with Lanre. While she is fighting to get him, he will do all he can to make her love him. But for now, he will do the governor’s bidding.

“You are just so clueless”. Christian muttered. K did not hear everything Christian said aside from the “you” in the sentence.

“Christian!” Lanre called walking out of the kitchen. She stood attention on seeing K. She was not expecting him to be here. Could it be that Christian invited him? Was that why he brought her to his house. Was this some sought of arrangement? Lanre could not help but wonder. While K stood like a statue with his eyes glued on her. Lanre immediately shook off the feeling of surprise and wore a smile, one that didn’t meet her eyes.

“For a second, I almost thought you have been kidnapped or something”. Lanre said walking towards K and Christian.

“Kehinde, it’s good to see you again. You did not come with your fiancée? Or is she no longer in Lagos?” Lanre asked K who just stood there like a statue.

Christian intervened when K did not say anything and Lanre was looking at him expecting an answer. “K only came to get a file which he dropped at my place. I will give it to him now”. Christian said and immediately went upstairs leaving Lanre alone with K. Lanre turned towards the door and back at K.

“Please send my regards to her. Got to go”. Lanre said. For a split second, K felt relieved thinking Lanre was leaving Christian’s house and had thought he could just give her a ride back to her place. But reversed seem to be the case. She headed back in, to the kitchen. This made K grit his teeth. If he had been light skinned, then he would have turned red with anger by now.

“Are you the one cooking?” K asked, stopping Lanre in her track. Lanre smiled and told him it was an opportunity to be cherished. K thought she meant it made her feel good cooking for Christian. But it made Lanre feel good that she could help Christian after all the trouble he went through for her.

“Are you guys dating now? I never thought you will go for my friend, not to talk of one that is no different from a brother”. K said to her. She scoffed.

“I never thought you will go for my friend after ignoring her when you came to Nsukka. But I never cared either, what or who you will go for”. Lanre said. She never expected that to come from her mouth. But she said what she said and felt smug about it.

K could not say anything to her that concerned that. “Hope the food will be enough for one more person. I’m famished”. K said to her.
