She Did Not Deny It

Lanre just walked into the kitchen not giving him a reply. While K made himself comfortable on the couch even though he was not comfortable. He sighted Christian coming back down to the living room. He looked away from Christian as though Christian was his sworn enemy, someone he would not want to see.

“I thought you would be gone by now”. Christian said to K. K told him he was waiting for him to bring the file he forgot. Christian chuckled lightly.

“Did you play along with that so you could stay and see her face. She is cute right? Why don’t you just let go of the Igbo damsel and marry her instead. You could both run away from the country you know”. Christian said to K. His eyes danced with amusement and anticipation of what K would say.

“I will beat you to pulp if you keep ranting nonsense”. K said to Christian who only took his threat lightly. Christian told him to calm down. He told him he should not get worked up and let a woman come between them.

Just then Lanre came out. Christian face palms himself. He had totally forgotten about the food he was to cook.

“F**K damn shit!” Christian cursed. Then he stood up and told them that he had to go back to the kitchen to cook the noodles he was supposed to have cooked. He still had the apron on. But Lanre told him not to worry because she was done cooking. Christian yikes and told Lanre to forgive him for not taking serious what was supposed to be his job.

“Are you high on drugs?” Lanre asked. Christian frowned. He does not take drugs, why would she ask such a question.

“You got hurt because of me, and cooking the noodles was the only way I could compensate for the inconvenience I cost you and you are apologising. You must be high on drugs for doing that”. Lanre said feigning annoyance. Christian immediately realised where she was coming from. He had a smile on his face and kissed Lanre on her cheek. Then he rushed off to the kitchen. That kiss he gave Lanre was like the sting of a bee in K’s eyes. It stung. He hated it that Christian kissed Lanre. Today it was a harmless kiss on the cheek. Someday it will be her lips.

Meanwhile Lanre just smiled. She sat down on the couch next to K. She took a cushion in her arms embracing it. Then she asked K how his work was going as though nothing had happened and the both of them have been in perfect terms all these while.

“Break up with him!” K said. Lanre chuckled. She told him it is not in his place to tell her what to do.

“No be you go tell me wetin I go do”. She said to K. This sounded offensive to K because she had said he should not tell her what to do. She did not even deny it that she was dating Christian.
