Pretend To Serve

Lanre sat at the back seat of the car as Tega as she calls the driver drives her to the address Anita had sent her some days ago. She was busy with her phone replying messages and reading news. She also checked if anyone has applied for the jobs she put up online. She needed to hire a professional massage therapist who Ebitari will work with. And then, she needed a secretary to be in charge of keeping records. Her workers can’t be the ones taking care of the bookings as well as her customers.

She saw three applications for the position of the secretary while there was yet to be any for that of a therapist. She signed. She tended to turn off her phone as she wanted to rest her head for a while. Just then she received a call from Senator Ojo. She wondered why he was calling her line. She picked up to know why the man was calling.

“Hello! Ekaso Sir!” She greeted him good afternoon using Yoruba. The man replied her greetings politely and asked how she was faring. He asked her if the Governor’s wife was treating her well and if the women leader was also helping her out with anything she needs. Lanre clicked her tongue. It seems the man was ensuring his nude is secured.

“Yes Sir! Alhaja has been really nice to me. You don’t have to worry about me. If I need anything, I will contact you Sir!” Lanre said to him.

“Ahn ahn! Lanre, it’s not like that na… You do not have to need anything before you call me….. You can still call me and tell me about the movement of the Governor’s wife. Or are we no longer in the same team?” Senator Ojo asked her. She scoffs. So this is the reason why he called. He wants to know about the Governor’s wife’s movements. Does he think she was going to be his spy or what?

“Sir? I don’t understand? Why would a senator concern himself with a woman’s routine, one who is not his wife?” Lanre asked. The senator could not find his words.

“I…I…. I just wanted to be sure that you are alright with her and she was not giving you issues. I heard Olasile could be overbearing”. He said to her. Lanre nods her head. She told him she was fine and that if anything comes up, she would let him know.

“Remember to always make them see you are humble. If you must be served, then you must serve. And if you must get there faster, you must pretend to serve and strike the feet of the man. That way, they fall and you rise”. Senator Ojo said to her.

“I’ve heard you Sir. But let me say something Sir, the one who bites the finger that feeds him should get ready to drink enough blood or die while trying”. Lanre said. The senator asked her what she meant by that proverb. She told him to think on it before hanging up.
