K had not expected Ify to be back so soon. She said she would stay in Enugu for a week but had returned when she had only stayed four days. He suddenly regretted coming back. He should have just stick to his previous plan of staying away for two weeks. Ify gave him a hug immediately he stepped into the house. He pushed her away from him.
“My body hurts, I wouldn’t like to be touched”. K said to her. She gave him a sly smile.
“I can help you if that’s your problem. I’m good with my hands, you know?” She said. He shook his head telling her thanks and that he didn’t need her help.
“Is that how you welcome your fiancée?” Ify asked him. He told her it was not yet one week. And that if it completes a week, he would do well to welcome her, that is if he was even available for such. She laughed.
“Are you trying to pass your frustration on me?” She said laughing playfully. She told him she could not stay back anymore because her father suddenly changed his mind and was coming back home the following day, she had to leave. K did not say anything and just walked straight into his room. He fell on his bed with his eyes closed, then he placed a hand over his eyes.
Ify walked in calling him out for not asking her why she would leave just because her father was returning back to the house. He did not answer her.
“Do you know that my father does not approve our relationship? He does not want me to marry the son of a politician especially a Yoruba”. Ify said. K sniffed but did not say anything.
“Why are you mum?” Ify felt like hitting him, but she did not even think it would get him to answer her.
“You should listen to him. They say what an elder sees while seated, the young even while standing can’t see it”. K said lazily to her. She grunted showing how pissed she was.
“You think I will leave you if you treat me like this? Let me burst your bubble, the heaven already signed that I will be your partner, that was why I got to replace Lanre even at cousin’s wedding as the maid of honour. And now, I’m your fiancée, not her”.
K scoffs. Funny enough he does not believe in heaven writing people’s destiny anymore. Men seem to be the ones writing and riding the destiny of men. If not for his parents, this would not have been an engagement that he suddenly got tangled up in. It would have been a one month or one week game he would have played Lanre back into his arms. Now he feels entrapped.
He felt a hand on his shoulder. The next thing was someone’s breath lingering around his. He wanted to open his eyes but he cares less about giving Ify his attention.
