Just when the young girl, Eno and her friend were about to leave, a group of soldiers and some police men arrived with two cars. They all came to stand behind the young man who she already recited “rest in peace” for. A tear dropped from her eyes for the stranger. She does not know him but she pities him already. How can she not. The first group of soldiers came, now another set have come to join them. The death of this young man has become more certain to her. But her mindset changed the moment she saw the soldiers who has just arrived salute the young man.
“Who is he? Why did they salute him?” Eno wondered. She watched as one of the soldiers approached the one who had ordered for the young man to be taken away. She could not tell what they said to each other. But the group from the woman’s side saluted the other group while they did the same reciprocating the salutation. The young man must also be in the army, or maybe his father is and has a higher rank. Or perhaps, he was somebody of great importance. Eno could not see any other way to explain this.
Eno watched as the young man left with the lady she supposed is his girlfriend in a convoy. She saw these someone who looks like a lawyer approached the soldier’s wife and made her sign on a document. Then he gave her a paper before leaving.
“I will become powerful too. That is the only way to beat them. Get a bigger position, and you do not need to brag or lift a finger. They will all bow to you”. Eno said. Her friend looks at her with a frown.
“Stop imagining nonsense Eno! It will never happen. Your family is poor! How will you get into a big position. And besides, don’t even expect a miracle like getting married into a big family. Rich people only marry rich people”. Her friend said.
“Bisi, I don’t have the same mentality as you. Not every rich man today was born rich. I will make it. And plus, I’m not planning to depend on any man. Men are evil, I do not even plan on getting married”. Eno said. Bisi asked her if it is because her father beats her mom almost everyday. Eno eyes Bisi disapprovingly. She told her never to call the man her father.
“He is a monster. Don’t call him my father. If I have the opportunity, I will kill him. But my mother still love him. To me it is pure stupidity, she will one day die at his hand. When that day comes, I will officially become an orphan”. Eno said. Bisi sighed. Her friend was indeed strange. But she would not blame her, it is the home she grew up in. It has never been a happy home. Eno was also suffering mentally and emotionally. She even barely made friends. Bisi believes she’s Eno’s only friend.
