They Are Supposed To Protect Us!

“Stop! We are supposed to solve this like reasonable people”. Lanre said. But barely has those words left her mouth, a group of men on army uniform appeared at the scene. The woman wore a cocky smile on her lips. Christian only nods his head. It turns out they can’t really handle this situation like normal human beings. The woman’s tiny wings needed clipping.

The soldiers paraded themselves round the woman. One asked her to identify the perpetrator. She pointed at Christian and Lanre.

“So, of all the cars in Lagos, na oga wife own you come jam? You get mind o! (Of all the cars in Lagos, you ran into our boss’s car. You are fearless!)”. The soldier standing beside the woman said. It seems the woman’s husband was not there. He must have sent his underlings instead.

“Officer, please do not misunderstand. We already agreed to pay for the damage. So there is no big deal here”. Lanre said, but was told to shut up.

“Carry this bastard in the car. We are taking him with us”. The officer standing next to the woman ordered. The bastard he was referring to was Christian.

“Ehya! Them go con beat this poor boy! Hope say them no go kill am sha?” Some person’s in the crowd said while sympathising with Christian stating the fact that he will get beaten once these soldiers take him to the barracks. Worst is that they may end up killing him, and nothing would be done about it.

“It is too bad that those who are supposed to protect us and restore peace are abusing their powers. Blind to the evil around us, they invoke more evil and cause damage to those they are supposed to protect? Who will fight for the innocent? Are there still good soldiers out there who do not worship their oga’s wife? Are there still good soldiers who do not abuse their power? To open fire they flew. But the innocent without gun, they kill! In advance, I say, may his soul rest in peace”. A teenager who was among those in the crowd said. She seemed to be talking to a another young lady by her side who was also a teenager.

“Eno, you have started again with this poem recitation you do. Please stop scaring me with that rest in peace stuff you said. How certain are you that they will kill him”. The other girl said to her friend who she called Eno. Eno smiled at her.

“That is what they do. They are given gun to protect us with, but those who should trust on their bullets to save them are frightened by it. I’ve seen man beaten to death by soldiers just because he mistakenly stepped on the foot of one”. Eno said to her friend. Then she took her friend’s hand telling them to leave because she was not ready to witness another brutality. She would hate them even more and wish she could kill all of them. They were not needed if they would kill rather than protect those who they are supposed to protect.
