“Eno!” A voice called. Eno almost jumped out of her skin. She got to see who called her. It was a lady. The woman looked quite familiar. The woman asked her what she was looking for by that time of the night. Eno refused to answer. She was not about telling a stranger she was scared because she thinks her mother’s ghost will come haunt her, even though this woman was their new neighbour.
“Eno, I have been following you since you left the compound. I was scared you might do something bad to yourself or get hurt after what has happened. Come with me to my place, you can sleep at my place”. The woman said to her. Eno shook her head refusing the lady. The lady smiled at her. She told hey she understood Eno’s pain. She told her she had also faced the same thing. She told Eno of an NGO that will help her fight and get the father behind bars.
Eno did not want to believe her. But she needed a place to spend the night. She followed the neighbour who has offered a helping hand. Before Eno slept that night, the woman told her she would take her to the NGO the following morning. She also told her that the NGO would also help her sponsor her education or if she has anything else in mind to do, the NGO would support her.
The following morning, Eno was given a cloth to wear by the lady. After which they left. Eno did not know when the tears started following. It was those eyes looking at her with pity that has drawn her tears. She hated it. They were around when her mother was being beaten up by her father, none of them had gone to stop the man. She knew this because this was not the first time. Even the times she witness her father beat her mother, nobody ever comes to help. Sometimes she gets beaten together with her mother.
“Stop looking at me like that! All of you are wicked. All of you are responsible for my mother’s death. How can your ears become so dead to the cries of a woman who is being bathed in her own blood? Why look at me with pity in your eyes when you shut those same eyes when my mother was being beaten. Hypocrites! You are all hypocrites!” Eno shouted at them. The lady dragged her along with her, pulling her away from the neighbourhood. She got a bike to take them out of the area.
“That girl no even get respect”. A guy sitting by said. He had weed in his hands which he was smoking. He was talking to another guy who was doing the same thing as he.
“Even if she no get respect, we are wrong now. The girl is right! How we go just allow man beat him wife to death, even run away, we did not do anything?” %he other guy said taking sides with Eno.
