A Loving Husband

Lanre shook her head trying to free herself from Christian’s hug. She told him he has better things to attend to and that she should be the least of his worries. But Christian refused to heed to her. He told her she should listen to him now. He carried her into his car. She told him if he was carrying her he would have to carry Eno as well.

“Who is she? Don’t tell me you are helping another poor homeless girl again. This is getting too much”. Christian said to her. Lanre told him it is called “networking”. She told him she’s building her own network of loyal supporters. She told him if she performs well enough, ninety-five percent of the people she will help will devote their loyalty and would give their lives for her. Christian placed a thumb on her lips. He bit his lips. He felt like kissing her lips. But he had to refrain. He left Lanre in the front passenger seat. He asked Eno to get in on the back seat. When he was sure he did not need to carry any other person in his car, he got in and settled into the driver’s seat.

“We will need our clothes if we are going to be staying at your place. So you will have to drive us to my place first”. Lanre said to Christian. He told her to forget about it. He would get them new clothes. Eno was amazed. If the guy was getting them new clothes, he must be filthy rich.

Lanre turned towards the window, she watched as vehicles drove past them on the road and as they drive past different vehicles as well. Her attention got drawn by Christian when he called her name only to ask her if she was comfortable with the seatbelt, if it was not too tight and if she wanted it to be adjusted.

“Chris, drive! I’m fine!” Lanre said. She felt bad for him. He was already acting like a good father and a loving husband when he is not even responsible for putting her in the family way. Christian told her he was just trying to be careful. The worst was when they went through a road that was a little bit rough. Because of the galloping, Christian would constantly ask Lanre if she was alright. It felt frustrating and she yells at him telling him to stop making her feel like she has some disease or something. Tears dropped from her eyes. She immediately wiped them off. She had wanted to ignore the changes in her body and refrain from doing any test, turns out she could not really escape.

Anita’s little piece of advice when she had gone to see Anita at the hospital in Abuja replayed in her head. Anita had told her to forget about K saying he was not deserving of her. Now she wonders what she would do. She shut her eyes. She felt guilty for yelling at Christian, but those words of apology could not seem to find their way out of her mouth.
