I Do Not Trust You

“Too bad Kehinde, you are only a child. You are not a person of my caliber. You are still battling with milk teeth and can’t bite. If I were you, I will marry Ify”. Mrs. Okafor said to K. K asked her what she stands to gain if he marries Ify. Mrs. Okafor laughed. She told him Ify is her neice and that she did not need to gain anything personally from their marriage. K scoffs. A smile crept into his lips.

“Madam, you are not the only one good at threats. Like I said, I give you three days to let that woman go and rebuild her shop. Make sure you compensate her well”. K said.

“And I wonder what your threat will be?” Mrs. Okafor asked.

“Your most precious son, Gozie in Switzerland, I hope he is doing well? He will look good in a casket”. K said. Mrs. Okafor told him she was not scared of him nor his threat. She believed he could do nothing more than a dead fly.

“Now you only have 48 hours. But that is the hour till you cry if you do not release the woman in the next 24 hours. You just ruined your three days grace”. K said to her. He hanged up on her without waiting for her to say anything.

“So you were saying?” K turned to Ify who stood there like a frozen sculpture. She shook her head.

“Lanre did not tell me anything Ify. I saw it myself. Just like you she must be confused how I found out about it. What neither of you understand is that Lanre is my obsession and I’m willing to go to any length for her. Like, I am done looking away from all these shit. I started it, now I’m saying it should end”. K said. Then he told Ify to go back home to her parents. He adviced her to go live her life and focus on doing her youth service then get herself a job.

“You are right! You started it. You knew your mother will only agree to see my parents if she knows we are in a relationship. So you pretended to kiss me at your birthday party. You knew they were there watching us. I didn’t realise that nor did I figure it out until my aunt mentioned the kiss. You were the only one looking towards the direction where they were. You used me to get Lanre jealous. But the truth is, you never expected me to act on my own, right? Too bad because my aunt was the one leading me. Kehinde Adewale, I called you here because I wanted to end this. I am willing to leave you. But I won’t let you end up with Lanre. You do not deserve her as much as I do not deserve her friendship either. She told me no man will ever come between our friendship, but you ruined it. You single handedly ruin our lives without lifting a finger”. Ify said to K. He told her that she should have refused him at the engagement party. He thought she would do that or call off the engagement after the party, but she insisted on staying and fighting Lanre.

“Do you not feel remorse for the shit you have done? You kept playing along like a sheep led into slaughter?” Ify accused him.

“That was because you and you crazy aunty changed the game”. K told her. Ify swallowed. She looked at him with disdain. She asked him to take her first to Lanre that she would like to apologise. She told him she would no longer apologise to his parents because it was all his fault. But K told her outrightly that it was better she does not see Lanre. He asked her to leave quietly.

“At least I should beg for her forgiveness”. Ify muttered.

“I do not trust you”. K said to her.
