Horrible mistake

I take slow steps towards the blood foundation. The house owned by the most influential man I'd ever seen. He owns the largest blood donor house in the city, Adam is what we were allowed to call him but he was only rarely in his office.

So we would often submit the proceedings to his assistant, Celeste. That name suited her well because her beauty was truly Celestial. Every vampire's was. It always made me feel inferior and really insecure about myself.

I'm not a blood donor for some reason in his house. He prefers me to help him with some orders around the block which puzzles me. Cause why the hell would he allow a yummy blood filled human deliver blood to an entire block of hungry vampires. Me and Melissa at least, the vampire next to me who doesn't look nearly as exhausted as I am. I'm sure if she wasn't here I would've been eaten ages ago.

"You know I could've gotten back home decades ago... I'm just waiting for you to catch up."

I roll my eyes. "Sorry I was born human."

"You can always tell Celeste to bite you so you can be a vampire like me... We can race to the house every night,"she chimes.

"No,"I bark. "I'd rather have unequal butt cheeks than be a blood sucking demon."

"Geez you're being so theatrical. We only need the blood to survive... It's like the way you guys kill animals for meat practically,"she defends. "So stop being hypocrite."

"Whatever,"I mumble and increase my pace. "Don't tell me you're mad,"she laughs and slaps an arm around my shoulder.

"Just leave me alone. I'm aching all over unlike you, so let's just get home already... We've stayed out too late anyway."

It's never comfortable getting odd glances from Vampires that pass us by. I heard they prefer their blood fresh from the host. And I doubt if I'm kidnapped that Adam will come get me. To him I'm probably just an irrelevant sales girl.

I hate to admit it but I've always been drawn to him. His looks, his kindness, he always offered us treats after returning from a sale. It's odd because he's centuries older than me and I'm just ten.

Melissa notices an iregular shape in my right pocket.

"What's in there?"she asks poking it.

"It's a gun."

She stares at me wide-eyed. "What are you doing with that?"

"I traded some blood for it"I reply plainly. "Are we even allowed to do that?!"she panics.

I shrug my shoulders and take a turn up the staircase leading to the entrance of the house. I push the door open and walk into the large room where we dine every morning.

Celeste's office is just underneath the spiral staircase. We casually walk in to meet Adam raking through a stack of money.

Thank God he's here today.

His gaze goes up to us and he nods."You can drop the bags over there,"he instructs while nudging his head to a corner.

We do as he says and I take out the proceedings before handing it to him.

About to leave the office he stops us.

Time for the treats.

"This isn't complete,"he mutters.

I freeze in my spot knowing the issue here is coming from me. "Did something happen?"

We both remain silent to the growing tension.

"Melissa... Did you drink my sales?"

"N-no, I would never."

His head snaps to me. "You know you can always tell me if there's something wrong."

I remain silent hoping it's not obvious how I'm trembling in my shoes. "You can't tell me even one of you doesn't know where the money shortage is coming from,"he states getting slightly annoyed.

Melissa knows fully well the problem is in my pocket right now but she's waiting for me to speak up myself. I don't even know how I'm going to confidently admit that I bought a weapon for killing vampires. He would kill me in an instant.

"Girls, I don't have all night,"he growls.

"M-maybe you miscalculated,"Melissa sputters out. Adam stares at her awestruck that she could say something like that. "Are you trying to say I don't know how to run my own business?! Why would I falsely accuse two children of stealing money! I'm not poor!"

I'd never seen him so mad since I got here.

At this point Melissa looks terrified and she doesn't know what to say next. "H-h-hilda,"she stammers.

Why the hell is she calling my name.

"Hilda? Is there something you're not telling me?"he asks with concern.

I try my best not to shit myself and to keep a straight face. "No."

At this point he gets to his feet retrieving his whip hanging on the wall. "It couldn't be Hilda... What could she possibly be doing with blood?"

There's no way he's going to use that thing.

Melissa gawks at him. "B-but it wasn't me."

"Then who was it?"

She shuts her eyes and shakes her head. "I-- I don't know."

I can't believe she's covered for me up to this point. I kind of feel guilty that I'm about to land her in a lot of trouble.

Adam approaches her slowly with a stern look on her face. "I thought I trained you better,"he sighs. "I never planned on turning my whip on you."

"I promise I'll get the money back,"she begs.

"Not until after you tell me what you've done with it."

At this point I have to intervene.

"A-a-adam."

His head snaps to me. "Yes Hilda?"

"Uh... There's something I have to tell you."

"I'm listening."

"Well... I'm the reason some money is missing... I traded it for something."

"And you watched me blame your friend,"he growls. "Seems you're the one supposed to be whipped."

"Please don't,"I beg trying not to expose all my fear.

"Do you want to stop me?"

"N-no but--"

He cuts me off when she charges for me. It's suddenly like everything is going in slow motion.

I yank the gun out of my pocket and shoot.

My eyes were sealed shut, but when I open them Adam is on the floor with a hole in his chest. He isn't moving and the hole seems to be spreading throughout his midsection.

He's really dead.

What the hell have I done.

I was just so scared.

"Hilda!"Melissa screams.

"It was an accident I swear! I thought he was going to whip me."

All she can do is stare at his lifeless body, terrified.

"Let's get out of here,"I say and drag her arm but she yanks it away.

"Let's? This is all on you! You just had to buy that stupid gun didn't you?! Now look where it led us to."

"I didn't know it was going to end up this way!"

"Well you should have said the truth earlier! I'm pretty sure if you did, he would have never pulled out his whip."

The door cracks open and Celeste walks in. "What happened here?"

Her gaze shifts around until it lands on Adam's almost disintegrated body.

Her eyes go wide and she claps a palm over her mouth. "Who did this?"

Melissa steps away from me.

I quickly drop the gun and shake my head. "It's not what you think."

I immediately find myself being dragged out of the room. "You're going to pay for what you've done."

"Please!"I scream. "It was a misunderstanding!"

The last thing I see is Melissa's disappointed face.
