Jack Barlow

The great war between Werewolves, Vampires and humans.

Actually make that just the Werewolves and vampires cause us humans were just in their way.

I had a friend who was a vampire, Enzo was his name. I could only remember because I had a crush on him when we were little. He always stood up for me when the Werewolves made fun of my height. Well Seven was a Werewolf but she never picked on me.

It was kinda sad that they had these cool powers and I was just the weak mortal.

My parents always made me feel special though, But it all ended two nights after the war when the border was set up.

People found new ways of making money by selling humans to vampires that needed slaves and blood.

I just happened to be the perfect target coming home from a late night errand. I can't tell who grabbed me. But I blacked out just after that.

Here I am twenty years after committing murder by accident sitting in a dark torture room, being drank from almost everyday. It's not like they liked the taste of my blood.

They just wanted me to suffer.

The door cracks open and some light peeks into the room. In front of me is a guy holding up the keys with a smug smirk. "Today's your last day in here... Hope we didn't suck you too dry,"he mocks.

Twenty years in here gave me more than enough time to develop hate and anger for vampires. If I could burn them all to ashes I would.

Without hesitation.

I rise from the ground and walk past him out of the exit. I find myself in the middle of the hallway crowded with vampires. But one of them catches my eye.

She has a similar look to Melissa. But my guess is right when she approaches me with a smile and pulls me into her embrace. "I heard you would be out today... So I came to see you,"she beams and let's go of me. "You're awfully lean Hil--"

"Why wouldn't I be,"I state gruffly.

She backs away from my harsh tone. "Is there something wrong?"

I fight the urge to walk away. "Don't ask me that,"I snap. "I hope your life has been great."

"Geez... You're not even happy to see me again."

"Look at me,"I state with my arms held forward. "Do I look happy?"

I'm pretty sure I look like one of them. Pale and lifeless.

"Well... I thought you would need some guidance after leaving, so I can direct you to someone who you can work for as a donor... She provides good shelter too."

"Donor?! Look at me!"I holler at her gaining some attention from people passing by.

"S-sorry, I was just trying to help."

"Well I don't want to be publicly known as Adam's killer because he was really popular, so do me a favour and find me a good hair salon."

I'm going to change every everlasting detail about me.

~~

Blonde hair was Melissa's pick and so was the tattoo on my neck. We're currently walking towards my job appointment.

"I'm really sorry about everything that happened in the past Hil--"

"Wait... I have to change my name too."

"How about... Katherine... Katherine Foster."

I nod in agreement. "I'll go with that,"I say with a shrug. "So what were you saying?"

"Well... The house almost closed down after Adam died but someone else took charge thankfully. I never went back there after that night though... It brought back horrible memories."

"Let's just forget about the past,"I mutter. "It's best for now."

She nods. "I'm just happy you weren't slaughtered."

I would have preferred to be.

Our journey stops in front of a gate ringed around a large castle. Judging from the hefty men on either side this place is legit.

"Is this the place?"I ask her.

"Yes of course... It's a home for rich vampires but you could also get a small room as long as you're donating blood."

We progress to the front gate where the guards are and pause in front of them.

"Here for an appointment with Anne Barlow,"Melissa asserts.

"Only one person can go."

Melissa rolls her eyes and turns to me. "Her office is at the last floor."

"Last floor of that?"I ask and point at the forty foot building.

"Good luck,"she pats my shoulder before leaving.

Would you take a look at that.

The guards open up the gate permitting me to step through. There are limos parked everywhere making me understand why this place is only for the rich.

I climb the staircase leading to the entrance having to Venus fly traps on either side of it.

I push the door open and find myself in the large main room with a high ceiling and dark walls. The place is brisk with different kinds of vampires moving around.

Without catching any attention I make my way to the stairs.

I feel like fainting halfway up wondering why they couldn't install an elevator. Once I get to the top there's a large double door facing me at the end of the hallway.

I drag myself towards it and knock hearing a light reply from the other side.

I'm found face to face with a pretty lady sited behind a large desk filled with files and stacks of paperwork.

"I-- I..."I bend over and place my hands on my knees trying to regain my breath. "I'm here for a job."

She squints at me. "You're awfully pale to be a human... What's your name?"

"Hil-- Katherine Foster."

"So what would you like to apply for?"

"A blood donor."

She nods and pulls something out from her desk compartment. A new syringe and a plastic cup.

"Come closer... I don't like to bite so I use this instead."

I've always hated needles.

She takes my arm and uses the needle to extract some of my blood before spilling it out in the cup. "We always have to make sure the blood is sweet enough... My personal favorite is O positive,"she grins before taking a sip.

Her eyes go wide and she spits out every drop before wiping her mouth with a hankey. "I'm so sorry you had to see that... But we can't use your blood."

I heave a sigh. "Thanks anyway."

Heading for the door she stops me. "Why not stick with the people that bought you?"

The person that bought me is dead. And not having someone you belong to means you're free meat for anyone who needs blood.

I'm not ready to die that way.

"They... Don't want me anymore,"I sigh.

"I see,"she replies. "I have a suggestion with where you can stay until you find a job."

Why is she even being nice to me?

She picks up her phone and dials a number. "Haley... I need you to direct someone to room 302... She'll be living with the inhabitant there."

She cuts the phone and flashes me a smile. "Sorry there are no vacant rooms... Haley is waiting outside."

"T-thankyou,"I nod and exit the room.

Right in front of me is a jovial girl with a wide grin spread across her face. "Come with me."

She grabs my arm and starts to lead me down the stairs. We finally stop at a floor I'm not sure of and walk to the fourth room.

She knocks on the door and waits for a reply.

But there's none.

She knocks again, a bit louder this time.

The door slowly opens up and all I can see is a dark room. I can't tell if there's anyone inside until my eyes meet with two glowing green orbs.

I jump from the sight of him.

He looks a bit irritated by the sight of me. Like he would rather die than be standing here.

"Stranger meet Jack..."

"Jack Barlow."
