"We will be having interns now, for the first time" Beth, our supervisor announced, during our meeting.
"why?", we all asked, in our mind and only one got to say it out loud.
Why would we be having interns now, anyways.
And I don't think we have enough room to accommodate them, how ironic. We have a spacious building, I mean it's a library, but what would they be doing. We can handle everything that we have right now is the right phrase.
But hey, they're students. That's what they had might had felt when we were interns before.
They came in exactly five intern students, as we only have 5 offices here. There are 3 ladies and 2 gentlemen. They all came from HUMS (Human Sciences) Department, majoring in BA- And you can smell the city life emanating from them, welcome to the rural life.
We asked several questions on why they decided to come here, and they did not decide. Apparently their main university decided to exchange students from their main university to their other university branches.
There will be one intern each to take care of, good. Their sparkling eyes and excited fidgety bodies reminded me when I was an intern. They introduced themselves one by one. These fresh interns had the opportunity to choose which office that they want to.
Too bad for them, there's nothing to choose from to actually, we all have similar offices and we all have the same job, to arrange books, to accommodate reader, and to find books that are not there in the first place.
We just let them decide on their own, it would be too much pressure if we would be there gawking at them. Our supervisor just instructed them to knock on our doors.
"ma'am, can I enter?"
"Ah yes, just push the door",
I instructed. After a couple of seconds. The door is not yet opening, ah!!!, the door. He might not had expected the door to be a little bit heavy. Then the squeaking sound of the door happened.
"Hello, ma'am. I will be the one who will be staying here", He said, shyly.
"Hi, okay. Seat down first, we will discuss the things that we would be doing"
He smiled again, shyly
"Okay, let's start. Unfortunately, or fortunately I will be the one handling you, I will be the one who will be grading you. And too bad also, you need to do things that might be uncomfortable or you will be experiencing experiences for the first time. You will be cooking your own food here in our kitchen. You can schedule with your fellow interns who will be cooking for every lunch.
Sometimes they will ask you to cook for the whole people here. I don't know that much, it's just that."
"It's okay ma'am, I'm used to", he said smiling, but with confidence now.
"First task, is to label all these remaining books". I instructed.
I don't actually want my intern or Gamaliel to do labeling as his first task but I really need help. I used all my time labeling and still, unmarked books piled up on my office's floor. He had been working tirelessly that's why I allowed him to take a break first. It would be embarrassing to just keep him here; when his co-interns are just there in the veranda relaxing.
And I was quite happy to finally see the part of the pattern of the rug placed in my placed. I haven't seen that for a while since they delivered these new books. I felt like it has been covered by months.
"Ping!!!", sounded my messenger.
Oh yes. I totally forget to contact him. Unknowingly I entered the small stair that leads to the roof top. It was spot when I call or whatever, rooftop was actually off limit that's why the door that leads to the stair is always close. But I kept using it.
Our call ended, our plan for the coming event is set. I need to clear my schedule also as it would be unfair to Yohan.
I started to walk back to my office when I really can't ignore their excited laughs and giggles. So I observed them not creepily just observing them. And with a split minute of watching them, I already realized that Gamaliel, my intern is the life of the party, he is the joker of their group, he is certainly the social butterfly. Good for him.
I always buy two cups of coffee every morning for both of us. It's not a requirement but it's one thing that I learned from my supervisor and I've always wanted to try it also. I know he might had felt uncomfortable about it but I assured him, even telling him the story on why I insisted on doing so.
There's not much actually work because thanks to him, we were able to mark all the books that might had taken for another month if it was only me. I encouraged him to really do and finish his other requirements for his other subjects.
He has always been coming earlier than me as usual, but today he was beyond early. Gamaliel was there in the coffee as if waiting for someone, he was waiting for me. He ushered me to go inside first so I did. He sat in the table, and keeps on looking at me, while I was filling the coffee. Then, shyly approached me.
"Since you are buying one for me anyway, can it be chocolate". He confidently asked me with a hint of nervousness.
"Ah, okay, sure", I replied a little bit taken aback.
"Sorry for making you uncomfortable it's just that it would be a waste if I don't enjoy it". He said then smiled
Make sense, I thought.
It was Friday then, that our Supervisor Beth decided that it would be a nice thing to have dinner, all of us. It would be bothersome to cook everything so we would just be ordering, then re-heat it. While waiting for the order we arranged ourselves in the kitchen.
This kitchen had never welcomed people with this much number. It would be too much so I requested that only a few of us could work in the kitchen and the others would wait in the dining room. The two female intern rushed to follow me in the kitchen, and said that they can help.
We had been there waiting for quite some time that's why I thought it would be nice to have a warm tea first.
"Oh, that would be nice. I think this would be good for Gamaliel" uttered by one of the female intern
"Oh yeah, poor him. I think it could lessen what he was feeling", the other one replied.
After hearing that I was really bothered and so I asked.
"Why, is he not feeling well. He never told me he was sick?" I asked
"His stomach, I think. He mentioned like, acid…..., I don't know", the first one said
"Acidic…yes, he said that he felt like he became acidic", the other one continued.
Yikes, that's why. It's my fault. I didn't know or didn't bother to care that he could actually get acidic because of the coffee that I had been giving him, as a good supervisor. I felt bad.
