Chapter 39: Emily: All Smoke, No Fire

I can't believe what I'm seeing. The building is intact. Not so much as a hint of smoke. No fire damage. I rush toward the kitchen window and peer outside. Only the research lab is reduced to a pile of fiery rubble - everything around it is untouched.

"What? What is it?" Aiden asks, shoving his way into the kitchen. "No way."

"My thoughts exactly," I say.

"What is going on around here?" Tom asks as he offers his hand to Marjorie and helps her out of the bunker. "It's like they're toying with us or something."

"All the more reason to get out of here as fast as we can," Marjorie says. "I grabbed more food from down there, but maybe we can snatch that laundry basket and take it back with us."

"I'll grab it," Aiden offers.

"No!" I say too quickly. "It's too dangerous. You'll be out in the open, exposed to those things."

"I'll cover him," Tom says, holding his gun up.
