Meeting the gears(4)

Conradin sat at his ornate wooden desk, engrossed in reviewing the test papers of the administrator candidates. His study was dimly lit, with the soft glow of candlelight casting elongated shadows across the room. Piles of parchment and scrolls were scattered about, evidence of his diligent work.

As the king meticulously examined each response, he made notes and annotations in the margins, occasionally muttering to himself as he weighed the merits of different candidates. His brow furrowed in concentration, Conradin was fully absorbed in his task.

The door swung open, revealing Frederick of Baden, his loyal friend and confidant. Conradin's gaze momentarily left the test paper he was reviewing, his piercing blue eyes locking onto Frederick, who had a half-smile on his face, as if he had a purpose for the interruption.

"Frederick," Conradin said, his voice carrying a touch of annoyance at the interruption. "Can this not wait?"
