Chapter 16: The bomb

She shrugged. She was clearly not in love with her current job. But she was young, and she’d move up in the world. Probably quickly, if she really was as smart as she seemed to be. “Most of the time, I just research, forming databases and things like that. Sometimes, though, I get to do what I like best.” She didn’t wait for him to ask what that was. “I get to investigate unsolved crimes.”

“Really?” David got an image from Lost in Space. The robot flailing its tube arms and screaming ‘Danger Will Robinson, Danger!’ He fought to keep his face and his voice calm. “Tell me about that.”

“Not until you answer a question for me.” She smiled again, then leaned closer to him over the table. She smelled like raspberries. “How did you get so much money?”
