Chapter 18: Raising the danger level

“I’m fine,” he said. “I mean, it’s all interesting. This sort of thing is amazing.”

“Yeah,” she blushed again, smiling. “Most people have no idea.”

“Oh, I know.”

He knew her research wouldn’t catch him for things he had already done, but by the time they went back to her apartment, he was seriously considering walking away after this score. He was almost on the edge of panic. It was all he could do to stop from running away then and there. It took every ounce of his willpower not to have a drink.

She did a lot to relax him, though. Even if she didn’t know he was panicking, her touches, her caressing, and the way she nibbled his ear calmed him down a lot. It changed things for him. By the time they fell asleep that night, he was considering dawdling in New York after the job was done.

If only she wasn’t FBI. Any other job would have worked. Any other career. Why did she have to be FBI? Why not a professional assassin? Or a cook? Even a lawyer would be better than an FBI agent.
