Chapter 19: Backup plans

“Okay, here’s what McKenzie found out.” David took a deep breath. The room was dark, but he knew who the other person was. “There is only one janitor. It’s the same guy every night for five years. He almost never takes the day off, and when he does, no one replaces him.”

“So that way’s out,” Collins said. David didn’t need an explanation.

“Yeah.”

“Fine. What else do we know about the cleaning?”

“The museum pays two people to do spot cleaning during the day. The janitor is well recognized by the guards, comes in just after closing and leaves before two in the morning. The morning shift comes in at five in the morning.”

“So we have a three hour window? That’s plenty of time.”

“That’s a three hour window from the janitors, not the guards.”

“Still. Three hours during which we can be pretty sure where everyone is.”

“Yes.”

Collins smiled, his eyes empty. “Like I said, plenty of time.”
