Chapter 21: Dangerous liason

David went back to his own dinner, knowing that he had deflected her from asking prying questions, even if he hadn’t gotten her mind off the subject. He focused himself on her. He resolved to turn on all of his charm, make sure that she was as enamored with him as she could be. That way, she would only think the best of him.

He would also work on separating himself from her, emotionally. He had to sever any ties he felt, get rid of any bond. He’d come to a decision. He had to get away from her. He couldn’t ever call her again. Relationships were not something it paid to have in his profession.

She cut him off at the pass. “What time are you leaving?”

His mind answered automatically. “Around noon.”

She gave a weak but inviting smile. She knew something was up. “Can we have lunch before you go?”

“I don’t think I’ll have time,” he said.

“Oh,” she said. “I see.” She looked so disappointed. Like someone had kicked her puppy or something.
