Then again, maybe it would be a fruitful one. If she was lucky, Montana would forgive her for everything, and help answer a question that tore at her every night. And, worst case scenario, he’d break her heart and she’d have a place of bitterness from which to be creative. Nothing helps creativity like being bitter.

That was the real secret of the depressive artist. They hate themselves, they hate the world. That hatred is a huge pool for creativity. It’s hard not to draw something out of hatred. There’s so much there, so much emotion, so much anger. But all you get out of it is darkness, pain. You can’t get anything really good. You can’t get a solid resolution. You can’t go anywhere. You can’t grow. And you can’t give back to anyone. That’s the important stuff when you’re writing.

Hatred makes you prolific. But it doesn’t make you good.

No. Desperation makes you good.
