Side Story 4: Incurable, Hopeless

Saying goodbye to the doctor, Xia Yu arrived in front of Kong Hanyue's ward.

He first arranged his facial expression, revealing a pained look, and then opened the door to the ward.

Kong Hanyue, who was originally happily playing with her phone on the hospital bed, became anxious upon seeing Xia Yu's expression.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

Coming to the bedside, Xia Yu held Kong Hanyue's hand with a grieving look on his face, "The doctor said there's no need to continue treatment."

"What? Hasn't my health improved lately!" Kong Hanyue looked at Xia Yu suspiciously. She had just been told that this would be a minor surgery, how did it suddenly become incurable?

Xia Yu did not answer but continued to look heavily at Kong Hanyue.

Kong Hanyue felt more and more uncertain. Other than giving birth to Xia Yu and Yuxue, this was her first time having a surgery in a hospital, and she was already a bit uneasy.

She thought of the TV series where the protagonist deceived a terminally ill parent, saying it was just a minor illness.

She looked at Xia Yu anxiously, "Did you lie to me? What kind of illness do I have?"

Not knowing what Kong Hanyue was thinking, Xia Yu remained silent.

Kong Hanyue took this silence as a tacit acknowledgment. Her hand loosened, and the phone slipped.

Pa—

The phone fell to the ground.

Staring at the phone on the ground, Kong Hanyue's eyes were blank.

She saw that Xia Yu stood up.

"Where are you going?" Kong Hanyue grabbed Xia Yu's hand.

"I'm going to complete the final procedures for you." Xia Yu said.

Kong Hanyue's mind flashed words like coffin, graveyard, and cremation furnace. She held Xia Yu tighter, "I feel like I can still be saved!"

"The doctor said we can give up." Xia Yu replied.

"No way, I haven't finished the Kong family's genealogy yet!" Kong Hanyue's will to survive was strong.

As the two were struggling, the doctor knocked on the door and entered.

Seeing that neither of them seemed to have any intention of leaving, the puzzled doctor asked, "Why haven't you left yet?"

Hearing the doctor's words urging her to leave, Kong Hanyue completely gave up. She let go of Xia Yu's hand and lowered her head.

After two seconds, she asked in a hoarse voice, "Doctor, how much longer can I live?"

The doctor had a blank look on his face, "How would I know? I'm a doctor, not a fortune teller."

"About how long can I hold on with my illness under normal circumstances?" Kong Hanyue asked further.

The doctor frowned, touched his bald head, and said, "Your illness is cured, the surgery was very successful."

The ward went silent. Kong Hanyue turned her head to look at Xia Yu, who had already quietly moved to the door.

Throwing off the blanket, Kong Hanyue chased after him.

Xia Yu ran a few steps, seeing that Kong Hanyue would not stop until she caught him, and worried she might hurt her wound, he could only stop.

"You unfilial son, you lied to me!" Kong Hanyue grabbed Xia Yu's collar with her left hand, and hit him with her right.

"I didn't! I said there's no need for treatment, and of course there isn't because you're cured!" Xia Yu said while protecting his face, with an air of righteousness.

After hitting him more than a dozen times, her hand aching, Kong Hanyue angrily let go.

"Hurry up and go through the procedures!" Kong Hanyue went back to pick up her phone, and dragged Xia Yu towards the elevator.

After calming down, the thought of not having to lie on the hospital bed anymore made Kong Hanyue happy again.

Xia Yu's mood was also quite good, because he successfully teased Kong Hanyue.

The only one in a bad mood was the doctor standing aside.

The doctor asked three philosophical questions: Who am I? Where am I? What happened?

Three seconds later, after deducing the cause and effect, he touched his head.

The little nurse following the doctor looked enviously at the direction Xia Yu and Kong Hanyue left: "Young people nowadays really know how to have fun."

"Young people?" The doctor glanced at the little nurse beside him, "They are mother and son."

The little nurse looked at the doctor in astonishment: "Mother and son?"

"I couldn't tell either, I wouldn't have discovered it without seeing the information," the doctor marveled, "I don't know how she maintains herself, it's a pity my wife is already an old hag, otherwise I would definitely ask."

"Doctor, you can ask for me!" The little nurse complained that the doctor had missed the chance.

The doctor glanced at the little nurse: "I ask, and then your husband benefits? I'm not stupid."

Turning around, the doctor returned to his office.

Downstairs, Xia Yu and Kong Hanyue, who were being talked about by the doctor, got into the car.

As the car drove out of the hospital, Xia Yu received a call from An Siyao.

"How is Mom?" An Siyao asked.

"In an hour we'll be home, she's coming to nag at you right away."

Xia Yu glanced at Kong Hanyue, who snatched his phone.

"Hello, Yaoyao, I'm almost home, is Yinyin there?" Kong Hanyue asked.

"Grandma! Grandma!" A little girl's voice came through the phone.

Before Kong Hanyue could answer, the girl hurriedly corrected herself: "Ah, not grandma, it's sister, I know I'm wrong!"

Xia Yu rubbed his forehead, his granddaughter calling him sister was probably unique to Kong Hanyue in the whole world.

"It's okay, it's okay, just call me grandma." Kong Hanyue sighed.

The two chatted for a while, and Kong Hanyue shared some experiences of her second pregnancy with An Siyao before hanging up.

Xia Yu took the phone back and casually tested Kong Hanyue's forehead temperature.

"What are you doing!" Kong Hanyue slapped Xia Yu's hand away and asked fiercely.

"You don't have a fever, so how come you realized you're a grandma today?" Xia Yu looked at Kong Hanyue curiously.

Kong Hanyue didn't answer immediately, she looked out the window and sighed:

"In the past, I was always happy by myself, feeling like it didn't matter whether you guys were there or not, but now after being sick for a few days, I feel like you guys are quite important."

Xia Yu stared at Kong Hanyue in astonishment, not expecting that she would gain some insight after a bout of illness.

Kong Hanyue's thoughts were focused on self-reflection at the moment, not noticing Xia Yu's gaze; she continued, "In the past, when something happened, I could act coy, but now I realize it's not that great."

Xia Yu stroked his chin, feeling that Kong Hanyue's return to normalcy was a good thing, so he didn't say anything. The most important thing was that the confusing generation gap had finally returned to normal.

"Shall I go back and look after your children? I have confidence in taking care of children, look at you and Yuxue, as well as Zeze and Xinxin who are all good children," Kong Hanyue looked at Xia Yu with anticipation.

Xia Yu didn't know how to respond; he had lived two lives, and he had brought up Xue since she was a child. Zhong Yunze was well taught by his father, while Zhong Yunxin was a complete delinquent girl who relied on intimidation. He couldn't figure out where Kong Hanyue's confidence came from.

Seeing Xia Yu not speaking, Kong Hanyue felt that he had tacitly agreed, so she began to arrange specific measures: "Starting from today, Yin Yin will sleep with me, which will make it more convenient for you at night."

Hearing this, Xia Yu, who originally didn't care, became sharp-eyed. Yin Yin usually slept with him at night, and now Kong Hanyue wanted to steal his daughter! However, it was indeed inconvenient to have Yin Yin around at night.

While Xia Yu was torn, Kong Hanyue continued to talk about the following measures: "According to your experience, give Yin Yin a sum of money every day, and let her do laundry, cook and take care of the housework. I just lie there and create a difficult growth environment for Yin Yin. When you have nothing to do, just scold her and let her know the importance of being strong from an early age…"

Kong Hanyue excitedly talked for five minutes, recounting Xia Yu's childhood growth environment, trying to replicate his success. "How about it?" Kong Hanyue looked at Xia Yu.

Xia Yu calmly analyzed, thought carefully, and came to a conclusion: "…How about letting Yin Yin call you sister instead?"

"No, I've already decided to be a mature adult who doesn't act spoiled," Kong Hanyue was determined.

Adults should not lie around and let children do all the work! And you're old enough to be a grandmother, yet you're only now deciding to be an adult?

"You can call Yaoyao and the others 'mom.' Then you'll have someone to act spoiled with," Xia Yu tried to persuade Kong Hanyue.

"I treat you like a son, and you actually want to be my dad?" Kong Hanyue looked at Xia Yu fearfully.

Pulling the off-track topic back, Xia Yu continued to persuade her.

By the time they arrived home, Xia Yu still hadn't convinced Kong Hanyue.

Upon entering the house, Kong Hanyue couldn't wait to implement her plan. She gave her granddaughter Yin Yin her phone and mobile payment password, and the practice began.

Xia Yu watched worriedly, but soon realized that he was overthinking. There was a lot of money in Kong Hanyue's phone, and the Yu family's mobile payments and online food delivery were already well developed. Yin Yin only needed to click on her phone to support her useless grandma.

After being taken care of for two days, Kong Hanyue reverted to her true nature, and the granddaughter and grandmother called each other sisters again, playing games together.

Turning off the computer monitor, Xia Yu sighed.

This "mom" was beyond saving.
