"Just as I expected!"
Unlike everyone else's shock, Li Yue felt quite relaxed. He had anticipated this outcome since he knew from watching the movie that this alien-created portal was not simple. The portal could transport monsters across vast distances to Earth and had an identification mechanism. Only objects and creatures it recognised could pass through smoothly, while anything else would be destroyed.
This understanding led Li Yue to stop requesting to deploy the nuclear warhead directly and instead use a rock to test whether the portal had the same capabilities as depicted in the movie. The result confirmed that the portal indeed functioned as described.
...
"General, what should we do now? Our nuclear warheads can't be deployed through the portal at all.
The five giant humanoid Jaegers stood around the bottomless pit, helplessly watching the portal up close but unable to proceed. The experiment had shown that even a rock couldn't pass through, let alone their nuclear warheads. They could ignore the situation and directly deploy the warheads at a distance, hoping the explosion's force would destroy the portal. However, if this were done, their efforts would be well-spent. Thus, this was a last resort.
Back in the Hong Kong command centre, everyone was frantically working to find out why this was happening and, more importantly, how to deploy the nuclear warheads through the portal successfully.
"Generals, I suspect the portal has a self-protection mechanism!" Dr. Hermann suggested, breaking the tension.
"Self-protection mechanism? What do you mean?" asked General Pentecost after a moment of thought.
"We know the aliens can send monsters to Earth through the portal, but we can't send anything back. This suggests two possibilities. First, the portal might only support one-way transmission, allowing only the aliens to send things to Earth. Second, the portal could support two-way transmission but has conditions. Only items meeting these conditions can pass through; otherwise, they face destruction."
Hermann explained his theory, laying out all his thoughts.
"How do we determine which of these is true? And what do we do to get the warheads through the portal?" General Pentecost asked, understanding Hermann's explanation but needing actionable steps.
...
"If it's the first scenario, there's nothing we can do. We'd have to deploy both warheads simultaneously, hoping their combined force would destroy the portal. But this approach is uncertain and might not work. If it's the second scenario, we have a chance. We need to identify the criteria for passing through the portal. However, I can't determine what this is in such a short time," Hermann admitted.
"Everyone, stop worrying. I think the portal's condition is the monster's DNA. Only those with the monster's genes can pass through; everything else will be destroyed," Li Yue interjected, breaking the silence.
"Monster DNA? Li Yue might be right! That could be the key. Why didn't I think of that?" Hermann exclaimed, realising the potential solution.
"If the monster's DNA is indeed the key, what do we do next?" General Pentecost asked.
"Let me think," Hermann replied, quickly brainstorming.
"I've got it! We can attach the warheads to the monsters' bodies to trick the portal into letting them through," Hermann excitedly proposed.
...
"But where do we find monster bodies now?" Though Hermann had a solution, a new problem arose. They hadn't anticipated this scenario, and all monster remains had been sold for funds to build new Jaegers. Finding sufficient monster bodies quickly would be challenging.
"Generals, urgent news! Our sensors detect an unusually strong monster energy signature approaching through the portal. And there might be more than one!" a researcher suddenly reported, alarming everyone.
"What? Monsters are coming now?" Everyone was stunned by this unexpected development. Generals Lin Zhen Guo and Pentecost quickly moved to check the situation.
"Is it a coincidence that just as we need monster bodies, they send monsters?" Hermann muttered, shocked by the timing. He didn't know whether to be happy or worried.
"Prepare for battle. Monsters are emerging, and their number and strength are likely high!" ordered Li Yue, relaying the information to the Jaeger pilots.
As they watched, a massive monster slowly emerged from the portal. After it, another monster followed, and then another, making it clear more were on the way.
"How many monsters will come through?" This question lingered in everyone's mind, including Li Yue's. He was curious to see how many monsters the portal could send this time.
One, two, three... The monsters kept coming. Three had emerged in less than a minute, with a fourth already visible.
