"But didn't you tell me your reasons the first time we talked about this? Your family wanted you to marry someone within a month...otherwise, your powers would be snatched." Lucy repeated his words but Davis remained silent.
His quietness was making Lucy feel more deteriorated than before which ultimately took her back as she found herself muttering in a whisper,
"Did you...hide something from me, Mr. Walker?"
Davis didn't reply immediately. He hit the road and decided to stay silent.
As much as his silence was eating Lucy, she never raised her voice until necessary.
Till now, she only viewed him in anticipation of hearing his voice but there was something which ultimately made her furious.
"Mr. Walker! If you have something to say, just tell me without beating around the bush. Why have you called me just now…"
"It isn't as easy as you take it to be, Lucy." Davis was driving the car and his earlier battle of thoughts vanished. "I wanted you to know more specific details about my decision."
"I don't have my parents anymore. The monarch of my family is my grandfather. He wasn't a good man in his days and was involved in shabby businesses too. Until my father was an adult, my family background was working in the mafia world."
Hearing his half words, Lucy's heart dropped. Did he just say that all the wealth that his family accumulated was from illegal work?
"But then my father decided that he would not like to follow my grandfather's footsteps. My father decided to draw a clear line between good and bad and he built up a business which is now known as Walker's group. We are a conglomerate dealing in diverse items and manufacturing. Fortunately, it had nothing to do with my grandfather anymore… until.."
Davis took a pause and shifted his gaze to look at his newlywed wife who seemed to be dumbfounded by the expression.
He had to take precautions but knowing what lay ahead, it was better to tell her about everything.
"Are you even listening?" Davis questioned and from the corner of his eyes, he saw recovering from the shock and nodding her head. "I'm."
"Then hear me out. My father died two years ago. It was an accidental death… and I and Denis were left alone. Until now you already know that Devis is my half-brother and I'm not very fond of him either. My father married my mother and had me, cheated on my mother with some other lady, and had Denis. But my mother was too weak to live in this commitment and she decided to divorce my father and took major wealth from the last Mr. Walker."
"She went abroad and laid low for few years while here, my father remarried his mistress and then his mistress who was Denis's mother also died and my father never remarried but had some of his fun times.." Davis was casual in his speech which took Lucy aback.
'How can he be so blunt about his own father?' She never had one and didn't know about their relationship either.
Yet what she heard from others was still that everyone respects their elders.
'Guess… he isn't from that breed.' She will not doubt if he isn't on good terms with other family members too.
But Lucy found that Davis wasn't done explaining the dynamics of his family.
"My father died and there was a will under his name. Without any of our knowledge, we all knew that Denis and I will get half-and-half portions. But everything changed when that letter from my late father showed I will inherit 10% more than my brother because he was sorry for my mother. Not that I denied it because I always sympathized with my mum. However, Denis never got more than what he deserved because his mother never held any position except that of a wife.. and she died without any shares in her hand."
"But everyone forgot that even though my mum left my dad and Denis got a chance to be a legitimate child, my mother had shares of the company. When she died abroad, her lawyer came to our family to announce in her letter that she had given everything to me. So this is how I'm the largest shareholder and Denis still despises me for everything I have."
Davis finally concluded and then traced himself to find Lucy nodding her head. "Understood. Your family… is complicated."
Davis smiled but that smile never reached up to his eyes. He only composed himself with the thought that everything happens for a reason and that reason ends up being true and fair.
Lucy took a deep breath but her simple gaze was never that of the front road. She pulled her saliva down and anxiety but kept a calm composure on the surface.
"Your family is shabby. But I'm grateful that you aren't involved in that branch of business which is.. belonging to illegal things." Lucy honestly replied but Davis had nothing to say on this.
Could he tell her that he still has connections and his name is one of the most known in this world, but he likes to stay away for a variety of reasons?
'Let's not scare her away.' Davis told himself and his eyes shaped like a crystalline moon.
Whereas, Lucy finally absorbed all the information and why he was still hostile with his brother at the banquet that day.
Despite being calm, she was still shattering in her heart. Yet Lucy took the courage to ask aloud. "This explains your reasons. But-"
"Lucy," Davis called her name and gained her attention when she shifted her neck to face his side profile. "Yes?"
"I just wanted to let you know that.. we are going to my grandfather's house. He would like to meet the daughter-in-law of the house today."
