Eurydice could tell from Emily's terrified expression that not only had she failed to calm her mind, but things had gotten worse. Engaging in a direct confrontation in broad daylight would almost certainly result in defeat. Emily's intense desire at the moment was like a sumptuous feast for these three witches who fed on greed.
Eurydice looked at the three beautiful women outside the window. They grinned grotesquely, their skirts swaying as they moved slowly. They watched Emily's bewildered state with amusement, as if they were destined to succeed and had no hurry to rush over.
Having lived for six thousand years, Eurydice rarely dealt with wizards or witches. They were formidable adversaries, especially these greed-driven witches, who were particularly troublesome. Whether it was humans or other species, desires were endless, which made their power boundless, with an infinite supply.
However, what puzzled Eurydice was that even if Emily had a strong desire, these witches had no reason to appear so blatantly in broad daylight on the streets of this ancient town.
The sun rose slowly, illuminating the entire town. It was a quaint and picturesque place, with traditional wooden houses painted in vivid red or left in their original wood color. Most of them had turned into deep brown hues over the passage of time.
The streets were narrow, only allowing two cars to pass side by side. Almost every household had bicycles or tricycles parked in front of their doors. There were no malls, no large commercial centers, and no modern-style residences. Being in this town made one feel as if they had traveled back several centuries.
It seemed that every household would open their doors to engage in small businesses, though none were large in scale. Some sold traditional snacks, some sold daily necessities, and others sold handcrafted trinkets. It was evident that this was a leisurely town.
Emily couldn't see this quaint and picturesque town through her eyes. Her vision was obscured by a thick fog, and as the old desires hadn't been completely eliminated, new desires surged in her heart—desires for life, desires to survive.
"Emily, calm down. You drive, and I'll give you directions!" Eurydice's face darkened. If they didn't hurry, Emily could very well become a "meal" for the three witches.
"Witches don't eat people, of course, but they can consume Emily's desires, leaving her mind empty. In truth, human emotions are inseparable from desires. Various desires intertwine, giving rise to a myriad of colorful feelings. If Emily were to lose her desires here today, it would be like losing her soul, becoming nothing more than a walking corpse, unable to experience any emotions. It would be no different from being a living dead.
"No... No..." Emily's hand trembled, overwhelmed and unsure of what to do. She had never been this scared before. She couldn't see anything, only feeling an overwhelming fear surging through her body. The more fearful she became, the less she could see. The less she could see, the more fear consumed her. It was a vicious cycle.
Yuri grasped Emily's hand, his icy cold hand holding hers. Surprisingly, she couldn't feel any warmth. His fair, trembling hand and his panicked eyes spoke of turmoil.
"You said you trust me. Come, you drive, and I'll be your eyes!" Yuri's voice was filled with gentleness, carrying an enchanting charm that gradually calmed Emily down.
Emily closed her eyes, took a moment to compose herself, and started the car.
"There's no one on the road now, go ahead and drive!" Yuri's voice was calm as water, gentle like the May sunshine—neither restless nor overheated, yet carrying warmth that pierced through one's heart.
Emily took a deep breath, slowly pressed the accelerator, and the car started moving forward like a snail.
The witches outside were taken aback. They didn't expect Emily, who couldn't see anything, to dare to drive. They exchanged a glance and were about to rush towards her.
"Accelerate!" Yuri shouted loudly, startling Emily, who immediately pressed down on the accelerator. The car shot forward like an arrow released from a bowstring.
With a loud "bang," the car seemed to collide with something, and a person crashed onto the windshield before rolling to the back of the car.
Emily was about to hit the brakes, but Yuri quickly yelled, "Don't stop! Keep accelerating!"
Emily knew that the person they had just collided with was one of the witches. She dared not hit the brakes again and floored the accelerator, speeding away.
Yuri was surrounded by two layers of bedsheets. He could only hide behind the sheets and could barely see some of the scenery in front from Emily's side. In truth, he wasn't entirely sure if there were people ahead. He could only ensure that the car wouldn't collide with any buildings.
He didn't actually want to hit the witches. If they provoked them further, no one would benefit today. Unfortunately, he just didn't see them earlier, resulting in the collision with the witch.
The witches were ordinary flesh and blood, and being hit like that must have caused them significant injury. The thing that sets them apart from humans is their ability to use magic. Unlike superpowers, their magic is something separate from themselves. In other words, an ordinary person with innate potential, talent, and unwavering resilience can choose to learn magic and become a witch.
On the other hand, superpowers come from within, abilities that cannot be taken away or stolen by others. Superpowered individuals can also learn magic to enhance their abilities, but witches can only envy the powers of superhumans.
"Turn left!" Yuri calmly commanded.
However, Emily didn't react in time, and when she turned the steering wheel, the car collided with an ancient tree at the street corner with a loud "bang."
Benjamin in the back was obviously heavily affected by the inertia and let out a few painful cries from the trunk. Yuri looked at the mangled car, which had been flattened at the front.
Unexpectedly, their troubles didn't end there. The car suddenly shook, and Emily felt as if it was lifting off the ground. She leaned out to see and noticed that the car was tightly entangled by branches of the ancient tree, slowly ascending into the air. She could sense the anger emanating from the tree.
"I didn't mean to! I'm sorry!" Emily quickly apologized to the ancient tree.
The car paused for a moment but then began to rise again. Judging by the situation, it seemed like it wanted to throw them down harshly.
"I really didn't mean to! I can't see anything now. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. We're in a hurry..." Emily continued to apologize.
"That tree has developed its own consciousness, but it's still young and cannot transform into a spirit. Pleading with it won't help; it's only driven by its own anger. It can't understand your words," Yuri chuckled at Emily's actions. He knew she must have been reminded of Hanshu Yan. Otherwise, knowing Emily's temperament, she wouldn't bother apologizing and might even uproot the tree.
Emily was taken aback. Benjamin couldn't withstand any major injuries at the moment. If they were to be thrown down harshly, the impact might be minor, but if something happened to the car, whether it be an explosion or damage to the vehicle, it could cost Benjamin and Yuri their lives.
In that case, all she could do was apologize...
