Chapter 14: Protective Instincts

As I heard Jane’s cry for help, a surge of primal energy coursed through my veins. My heart raced in sync with the urgency of the moment, and an overwhelming need to protect Mira consumed me. Without a second thought, I sprinted toward the door, my instincts pushing me forward.

Every muscle in my body quivered with anticipation as I burst through the entrance, my transformation into a wolf was imminent. But as I leaped onto the sidewalk, I didn’t find Mira under attack.

She lay on the cold pavement, her dog resting beside her convulsing body. Blaine was kneeling down next to her. What was he doing there?

Jane and Grayson stood just a few feet away.

“She, she had a seizure!” Jane exclaimed upon seeing me.

Blaine moved closer to pick Mira up but was stopped momentarily by her dog, Duke, who barked at him angrily.

“Move aside, you stupid mutt!” Blaine snapped, reaching for Mira again.

A growl erupted from my chest, raw and primal.
