Chapter 44: The Final Battle Begins

“You look content for someone who is about to face their final fight,” Maya commented when Kade slid into the seat next to her.

Kade nodded. “I know I can go into this last confrontation with some peace of mind, is all.”

Maya turned to glance over her shoulder towards the motel. Jamison was just escorting Valentino into their room, the door shutting just as their car pulled out of the parking lot. The only assumption she could make from Kade’s response was that something Jamison said when the pair stepped away had somehow eased Kade. Despite their circumstances, she couldn’t help but be curious about their conversation. Talking about something other than what they would be facing might lighten the mood anyway.

“Jamison, right?” Maya asked after she turned to face forward again in her seat. “You know, if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have ever believed that man was capable of real emotions.”
