All of a sudden, as if to defy them, Vol rose ever so slowly to his feet. The two aged warriors flinched back despite themselves, and the soldiers cowered where they had thrown themselves to the floor.

The feeling of wrongness hung in the air. It was inclined to make a man sick. They turned their eyes away from that giant youth, with his still closed eyes. They had the reaction that any child had, when confronted with the supernatural. They could not face it. They had to pretend that it did not exist.

All of a sudden, Vol's eyes peeled open, but they were not merely the eyes of a man. There were specks of captivating and dancing black darkness swimming amongst the green of his eyes. Even from a distance, it was obvious. Bert had heard of such things before, but he'd never seen it himself.
